Position Objective

The grounds and landscape team at Clover Park Technical College work diligently to maintain our campus grounds, parking lots, and roadways to ensure a safe, attractive, and accessible outdoor environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Your talents would contribute greatly to the beauty of our campuses.

As a full-time Grounds and Landscape Specialist, the primary functions and responsibilities are to maintain campus grounds, parking lots, and roadways to ensure a clean, safe, attractive, and accessible outdoor environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. You will work with a team committed to maintaining an already striking landscape. You will be working mostly outdoors in all types of weather and near operating machinery with loud noises and vibrations. Your duties may be performed on ladders or man lifts. Some indoor work includes planning, tool maintenance/cleaning, completing work assignments, and training.

The Grounds and Landscape Specialist performs a variety of tasks from the upkeep of the grounds, custodial, and operations all within the Facilities department. This crucial position has an important role in maintaining the college's health, appearance, and cleanliness standards.

This position is an overtime-eligible, full-time position.

This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302.

Duties and Tasks (Essential Functions)

Duty: Maintain campus grounds and landscape.
Tasks include:

  • Cut and edge grass areas and sweep up excess clippings. Collect and dispose of all cuttings, clippings, and trash from all grounds areas in accordance with best environmental practices.
  • Weed flower and shrub beds manually and or utilize appropriate chemical herbicides and pre-emergent objects.
  • Prune shrubs and trees to promote proper growth and to discourage rot and disease.
  • Perform proper operator maintenance on all hand tools, power tools, and, power equipment used to perform grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Service and maintain the smoking shelters located throughout campus as well as exterior trash receptacles.
Duty: Maintain all hardscapes on campus.
Tasks include:
  • Sweep, edge, restripe, control weeds, and fill cracks in sidewalks, roadways, and pathways.
  • Clear ice and snow from designated entrances and sidewalks located around campus and dispense ice melt as needed in a timely fashion to provide a safe environment during ice and snow season.
Duty: Remove and replace trees, shrubs, and other plants as needed to ensure proper landscape and grounds maintenance and repair/maintain campus irrigation systems.
Tasks Include:
  • Use hand tools and/or power equipment safely and effectively.
  • Plan the movement or removal of vegetation to ensure proper and necessary tools and supplies are used to perform each task.
  • Repair, replace, relocate, and maintain sprinkler heads, valves, and water lines to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the irrigation system.
  • Understand the operations and programming of all irrigation system models on campus to improve the efficiency of the irrigation system.
Duty: Assist and support the operations of the maintenance and custodial staff when necessary.
Tasks Include:
  • Assist the maintenance and/or custodial staff as needed.
Duty: Professional development, support, and training activities.
Tasks include:
  • Attend facilities training as needed.
  • Complete mandatory online and other pieces of training as required by Washington State or the College using a computer and various computer training programs.
  • Assist the facilities team members as needed with work activities that promote a safe campus environment.
  • Attend and actively participate in department meetings as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two years of successful working experience in a landscape operation.
  • Must possess a current Washington State Driver's License, vehicle insurance and a safe driving record.
  • Able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Basic knowledge/experience using a computer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in Landscape Construction, Grounds Maintenance, and Irrigation Technology.
  • Hold a current Public Operator's Pesticide License for weed, insect, and disease control.
