General Statement of Duties

Performs complex technical work involving the performance of environmental, chemical and specialized laboratory responsibilities. Reports to the Laboratory Director and at times to the Director of Health.

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:


Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology, Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry or related scientific discipline plus 3 years of related experience or the equivalent.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Working knowledge of bacteriological, clinical as well as administrative laboratory duties; knowledge of basic chemical and biological terminology and procedures.
Working knowledge of entomology.
Knowledge of proper procedures and safeguards in using chemical, electrical, mechanical, and biological equipment.
Skilled in performing chemical and bacteriological procedures and in operating various analytical instruments.
Skilled in the use of a personal computer and related software applications as well as Internet Resource retrieval.
Ability to carry out testing programs with initiative.
Ability to apply and formulate data obtained from weather instrumentation.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates, officials of other agencies and the general public.
Ability to operate all laboratory equipment needed to perform functions of position.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Connecticut.

Examination: 100% Training & Experience Assessment
The examination to determine a candidate's eligibility for the position will be a Training and Experience Assessment. This type of examination requires that you completely fill out the application, adding pages for additional relevant information where needed, and attaching any documentation of certificates, degrees, other significant documents, etc. A candidate's eligibility to be interviewed will be based solely on material submitted at the time of application. ESSENTIAL FEATURES:
Responsible for timely and accurate participation on all chemical proficiencies in the laboratory. Logging and interpretation done on all results.
Performs clinical and environmental laboratory analysis as necessary with minimal supervision; collects blood samples; performs a variety of clerical tasks, maintains log books and other records, answers telephone calls for technical assistance, dispenses sample bottles for analysis and describes sampling requirements, types reports and correspondence; prepares media, reagents and standards for laboratory procedures.
Updates and assists in establishing methods for environmental chemistry analysis including but not limited to lead in water, lead in paint, lead in ceramics.
Updates and assists in establishing chemical and infectious material inventory and chemical hygiene plan.
Performs tick analysis and insect identification. Provides the public with educational material and educates them regarding Lyme Disease and other issues.
Investigates noise and carbon monoxide complaints and conducts other field investigations as necessary, submits technical reports of findings for compliance with appropriate State and Local regulations and laboratory safety practices.
Calibrates and maintains all chemical and environmental instrumentation; maintains computerized logbooks and determines scheduling for preventive maintenance for this instrumentation. Cleans and sterilizes glassware and maintains laboratory equipment.
Covers other positions in the laboratory as needed; carries out First Aid procedures as required.
Maintains, troubleshoots and secures data from the Towns weather station.
Performs related work as required.

All positions may be subject to an interview process. The Town reserves the right to limit the number of qualified candidates who will be invited to participate in the examination, or any part thereof.

All outside candidates will be required to undertake and successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination, which includes a substance abuse test, given at the Town's expense prior to employment if conditionally offered a part time, full time or safety sensitive position.

The investigation will only be conducted as the last step prior to an offer. Refusal to sign the release form will terminate the candidate's further consideration.
