Laboratory Manager

Johnson County Healthcare Center (JCHC) is an integrated healthcare center featuring a 25-bed critical access hospital, a 44-bed nursing home, an outpatient clinic and a home health and hospice program. JCHC serves residents of Johnson County, Wyoming, with a population of approximately 8,500 spread across 4,175 square miles.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The Laboratory Manager provides work direction to department staff on a daily basis. This position conducts department programs and maintains department records.
  • This position establishes department policies and procedures and inspects the physical condition of the department equipment.
  • This position analyzes and resolves worker and work problems and suggests plans to motivate workers and achieve work goals.
  • This position participates in training department staff, orienting them to the work environment, and providing necessary supplies and equipment so that they may perform their work.
  • The Laboratory Manager collects and prepares specimens such as blood, urine, respiratory swabs, tissues, cultures and body fluids according to established procedures with physician orders. This position performs various laboratory tests on these specimens in such areas as chemistry, hematology, coagulation, molecular, toxicology, bacteriology, urinalysis, serology and blood bank, evaluating for infection or abnormalities. Testing includes setting and adjusting laboratory equipment and apparatus, adding reagents or indicator solutions from collected specimens, and subjecting specimens for processing according to established procedures.
  • This position observes reactions, changes of color or formation of precipitates, prepares and studies slides using a microscope; subjects treated specimens to automatic chemical analyzing equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analyses.
  • The Laboratory Manager evaluates the validity of the test results through the use of quality control procedures and knowledge of normal values and relationship of values and proficiency testing and stock cultures.
  • This position plots, graphs, and logs testing activities, statistics, workload recording, and results according to established procedures and assures that appropriate lab testing information is communicated to designated hospital personnel and physicians and agencies.
  • To perform these duties, this position operates such equipment as blood drawing equipment, dilutors, centrifuges, microscopes, spectrophometers, biological hoods, appropriate bacteriological stains, biochemical and antibiotic susceptibility studies.
  • This position performs preventative maintenance on department equipment according to established schedules and as needed. This position may answer the department telephones and report testing results to physicians or nursing staff and appropriately chart requisitions.
  • Researches new tests and equipment for the laboratory.
  • Oversee implementation of new laboratory testing and procedures.
  • Prepares and submits budget for routine laboratory operations such as service contracts, standing orders, and requests for new instrumentation.
  • Places bulk and standing orders for various departments of the laboratory.
  • This position may perform additional duties as requested or required.
  • This position must understand and practice Universal Precautions, OSHA Classification, Category I.

Hours, Salary & Benefits:

  • This is a full-time (32-40 hours per week) position with on-call hours (1-2 times a week)

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • 4-year degree or completion of laboratory course work plus ASCP certification or equivalent
  • Previous working experience as a Medical Technologist is required

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35.67 - $54.70 per hour
