Position Summary
The Department of Microbiology in the College of Science and Health at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse invites applications for a Laboratory Supervisor position to start January 2, 2023.

The appointment is 85% (34hr/wk) during the academic year and 27.5% (11hr/wk) during the summer.

Responsibilities include preparation of media and reagents for microbiology/clinical laboratory science teaching laboratories, cultivation and storage of bacteria, maintenance of mammalian cell cultures, performing phlebotomy and handling blood and bodily fluids, laboratory set up, ordering supplies/equipment, maintaining course supply/equipment budgets, and supervision of student employees.

A minimum of an Associate of Science degree (with laboratory experience) is required. Baccalaureate degree in microbiology or related discipline preferred. Must have experience in aseptic technique, working with infectious pathogens, and be knowledgeable about laboratory safety. Previous work experience in a microbiology laboratory setting is preferred.

Required Qualifications
  • An Associate of Science degree (with laboratory experience) is required
  • Must have experience in aseptic technique, working with infectious pathogens, and be knowledgeable about laboratory safety.
  • Must have demonstrated experience and expertise in microbiological principles and
    techniques, including aseptic techniques, bacterial cultivation, working with infectious pathogens, and maintenance of culture collections.
  • Must have knowledge of general laboratory safety and security.
  • Must possess basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, and use of the internet.
  • Should have knowledge about safe exposure and handling of chemical and biological hazards, including body fluids.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Art in Microbiology or a closely related discipline is preferred.
  • Previous microbiology laboratory work experience is preferred.
  • Previous experience in managing budgets and maintaining inventory is preferred.
  • Additional preferred qualifications. Ability to:
    • Work cooperatively and effectively with others.
    • Ensure proper safety precautions and procedures.
    • Plan, organize, and coordinate laboratory setup for teaching sessions.
    • Work with and supervise student interns and student employees.
    • Perform phlebotomy.
    • Maintain mammalian cell cultures.

The Department of Microbiology values diversity and faculty who bring diverse experiences to their teaching. The UWL Department of Microbiology is unique among comprehensive undergraduate institutions. Established for twenty-two years as an independent department, it houses twelve full-time microbiologists with expertise in diverse areas of microbiology and graduates about 30 microbiology majors per year. UWL’s new Prairie Springs Science Center opened in the fall of 2018 and houses state-of-the-art microbiology teaching and research laboratories.
