Juvenile Intake Officer - Court Supervision Job at County of Venango

OVERALL OBJECTIVE:

Receives and reviews allegations of delinquency in conjunction with the office of the District Attorney for the purpose of considering the commencement of proceedings under 42 Pa C.S. Sec. 6301 et seq., The Juvenile Act. The officer will process the allegations for informal or formal action before the Court, ensuring that there is balanced attention to competency development, offender accountability, victim restoration and protection for the community.

Receives occasional instruction and some supervision from the Juvenile Division Supervisor or Director in regards to daily work duties.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Conducts intake interviews/investigations; interviewing offender, victim(s), police, family, associates and other individuals with knowledge of the offender.

2. Screens juveniles for mental health, substance abuse or other problem areas by way of assigned software.

3. Prepares reports on the outcome of investigations recommending appropriate action to the Juvenile Division Supervisor or Director.

4. Responsible for processing/scheduling cases before the Court and ensuring notification to all interested parties including juvenile, parents/guardians, police, victim witness coordinator, etc.

5. Prepares written reports to the Court that includes recommendations for disposition and makes oral motions/recommendations concerning the same.

6. Assists in preparing family service plans.

7. Provides counseling and other supportive services to help probationers in their personal, social and economic adjustments to the community.

8. Maintains contact and schedules meetings with family, friends, schools, employers, clergy and other persons concerned with aiding probationers.

9. Conducts investigations to monitor probationers' activities and to prevent or remove harmful activities and influences.

10. Conducts random drug/alcohol testing as required.

11. Enforces Court orders and makes or assists in making arrests of probationers when necessary.

12. Assists with the collection of fines, costs and restitution as necessary.

13. Prepares Court orders as needed.

14. Prepares and secures out-of-home placements for juvenile offenders, makes contacts with organizations and institutions and supervises juveniles placed in those institutions.

15. Maintains case notes on probationers and prepares reports as required.

16. Utilizes equipment such as 2-way radios, phones, computer, as well as drug testing equipment, handcuffs, shackles and breathalyzers.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out the essential functions of job.

2. Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills.

3. Must possess initiative and problem solving skills.

4. Must possess the ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with clients, coworkers, and others.

5. Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to client information and records.

6. Must possess a willingness to travel as needed to perform functions of job.

7. Must possess some knowledge of principles and practices of social casework and the Court systems.

8. Must possess some knowledge of criminology and penology.

9. Must possess the ability to work effectively with disturbed individuals in an authoritative manner.

10. Must possess the technical knowledge of operating typewriters and personal computers and other office equipment and to prepare related reports as required.

11. Must possess knowledge and ability to utilize 2-way radios, handcuffs, shackles, breathalyzers and drug-testing equipment in a proper and safe manner.

12. Must have knowledge of laws affecting probation and the ability to carry out these laws and duties within the defined procedures of the law, including times when one must make independent decisions.

QUALIFICATIONS

A. EDUCATIONS/TRAINING

Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice or related field.

B. WORK EXPERIENCE

2 years of experience working in the juvenile justice system preferred..

C. OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Act 151/34 clearance (criminal history / child abuse)

Pre-Employment psychological testing

Pre-Employment urinalysis

Continuing education/training requirements

Attendance at Probation Basic Skills Academy

· Must not appear on Preclusion Lists as defined by “Pennsylvania’s Medical Assistance Bulletin 99-11-05 Provider Screening of Employees and Contractors for Exclusion from Participating in Federal Healthcare Programs.”
