The Coconino County Justice Court, City of Flagstaff, located in the historical courthouse in the heart of downtown, is inviting applications for The Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore. The person selected for this position will be appointed by the Superior Court Presiding Judge or designee.

NATURE OF WORK
The Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore (Pro Tem) will be responsible for hearing and determination of traffic, misdemeanor, felonies through bind over or resolution in justice court, civil and small claims cases, evictions, orders of protection and injunctions against harassment hearings arising within the jurisdiction of the Justice Court, Flagstaff Precinct. The selected candidate may also be scheduled to perform weekend or holiday initial appearances and/or arraignments, and hear cases as assigned in which there may be a conflict for the Justice of the Peace. This position offers intellectual challenges to incumbents whether or not they have a law degree. The impartial administration of justice in a small community and where decisions can make major impacts on people's lives can be stressful.

Please note that candidates may be considered for On-call Pro Tem positions.

Typical Duties

TERMS AND LOCATION OF APPOINTMENT
The selected candidate will be appointed as an at-will, exempt employee by the Superior Court Presiding Judge and upon approval of the Board of Supervisors. The Justice of the Peace Pro Tem may be subject to assignment in any limited jurisdiction court in Coconino County, although the primary assignment is the Flagstaff Precinct. The selected candidate may also be asked to hear "conflict" cases in other courts. The Superior Court Presiding Judge makes these appointments for not more than 12 months, at which time previously appointed at-will Judicial Officers such as Pro Tems, Commissioners and Hearing Officers may be re-appointed without competition.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
The person selected for this position must be of good moral character and a resident of this State for one year preceding their taking office. Candidates shall also be qualified electors of the State for not less than one year preceding his/her appointment. When assigned to specific cases or if working in the Court on a regularly scheduled basis, the candidate must conform his or her actions to the Code of Judicial Conduct, promoting confidence in the integrity, competence and impartiality of the Court.

The ideal candidate would have judicial experience in a Justice Court and be a member of the Arizona Bar Association for at least five years.
