The Musket Range Instructor conducts one on one firearms instruction for guests at the Colonial Williamsburg Musket Range utilizing historic black powder firearms. They assist in guest service, operations, preparations and maintenance needed for daily Musket Range operation.

WORK TO BE PERFORMED:

  • Provides specific one on one firearms instruction for guests following an introduction to the site by the Range Master/Safety Officer.
  • Ensures that range rules and safe gun handling procedures are followed at all times.
  • Assists with general maintenance of the range ensuring the site is organized, clean, and free of hazards.
  • Makes sure that the directives of the Range Master such as setting targets, firing sequences, starting/stopping fire on the firing line are accomplished in a safe manner.
  • Assists with proper on site storage of firearms, ammunition, and related range equipment.
  • Makes quick, accurate decisions regarding range safety. Uses tact when correcting unsafe behavior while maintaining guest self-esteem.
  • Communicates general information about Colonial Williamsburg, the Historic Area, and period firearms. Understands the Foundation’s mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Stays current on firearms safety procedures, ATF regulations, etc.
  • Oversees preparation of ammunition utilizing black powder, paper, and lead bullets.
  • Cleans and repairs firearms and maintains range and site equipment as directed by Range Master and/or the Armorer of Military Programs.
  • Transports participants, firearms, ammunition, and other range materials to and from the range using Foundation approved vehicles.
  • Follows emergency procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Final candidates are to present in person to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Employment Office a valid driver's license and an original MotorVehicle Record transcript (MVR). The MVR is to be no older than 30 days, issued by the same state as the driver’s license, and must cover the past seven years. New residents must obtain a Virginia drivers license by date of hire.

Must be familiar with and competent in the safe operation of black powder firearms.

Must receive a range officer certification within 30 days of hire date. Training and testing will be administered by the National Rifle Association, the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, or other organization as directed by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Must have a valid Virginia State driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to Colonial Williamsburg standards.

Working Conditions

Ability to adapt to a changing outdoor work environment which seasonally will include extreme temperatures, wind, rain, high humidity, pollen, dust, mold, and insects.

Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends and holidays.

Ability to perform various functions including standing and walking on uneven surfaces.

Ability to lean forward, reach & extend arms, kneel, stoop, bend & twist at the waist as necessary while providing one on one firearms instruction.

Ability and willingness to wear appropriate clothing and safety equipment to include range safety vests, caps, eye and hearing protection.

Ability to see in various lighting from bright sunshine to deep shade.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to do strenuous physical work in all weather conditions.

Must be able to lift 75 lbs.

Must be able to comfortably operate and maintain full control of a 10 lbs. musket.

Must be able to work in extreme heat (heat index up to 116F).

Must be able to work in extreme cold (temps as low as 25F).

Must be willing and able to follow Colonial Williamsburg’s black powder policy and use black powder firearms on a regular basis.
