Purpose of the Position:
The Instructor and Program Coordinator, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for the coordination of administration and support for the review and development of the EMT program within the Related Technical Instruction component of the EMT Registered Apprenticeship Program as designated to UMA, either in its own Registered Apprenticeship Program, or by nature of UMA’s contract or service agreement with another entity responsible for or involved with the Registered Apprenticeship program. In addition, the Instructor and Program Coordinator will serve as a faculty member for the program and will be responsible for all duties as defined for full-time faculty, as well as attending meetings, maintaining external requirements, performing a systematic review of program effectiveness among didactic, laboratory, and clinical components (as applicable), supporting recruitment efforts, completing other assignments as needed, and serving as a liaison with employer partners and health care facilities.
The Instructor and Program Coordinator will partner closely with program leadership and the employer(s) with whom the Registered Apprenticeship program is being offered to ensure relevant program delivery and smooth transition to the on-the-job training (OJT) component of the apprenticeship program.

Key Responsibilities:

Functional:
  • Plan and administer the designated portions of the Related Technical Instruction component of the EMT program, maximizing apprentice success on EMT National Registry exam, in OJT component of apprenticeship program, and in employment
  • Plan and deliver instruction, providing didactic and simulated clinical instruction
  • Evaluate performance, provide feedback, develop remediation plans
  • Mentor and support apprentices during clinical experiences, in cooperation with the clinical site; track apprentice clinical experience hours
  • Communicate with journey workers, the employer partner, and clinical sites regarding competencies, apprentice progress and needs
  • Regularly update journey worker training materials; partner with employer partner to lead journey worker training
  • Assist with monitoring budget for the designated portions of the Related Technical Instruction component of the program
  • Assist in applying for follow-on grant funding in support of the EMT program
  • Partner with program leadership, staff, and vendors
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and policies
  • Plan instruction in a web-enhanced teaching and learning environment that utilizes digital solutions for courses, textbooks, learning labs, on-line tutoring, and other learning support services
  • Develop and implement program changes and courses in response to the needs of the community and in coordination with the employer
  • Participate in faculty and other assigned activities including support of the activities of the Apprenticeship Committee
  • Partner with UMA staff, program leadership, and the employer partner to order supplies, textbooks, scrubs, and other program needs as appropriate; perform inventory; and ensure equipment is operational
  • Ensure program is delivered according to national standards for EMT programs
  • Facilitate apprentices’ certification application submission and schedule certification
    exams
  • Submit grades, data, and reports in a timely manner as required; maintain program, course, and apprentice records according to requirements
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with learners, colleagues, and the public
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; and effectively present information
  • Use e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software and use the Internet to access data, maintain records, generate reports, and communicate with others
  • Communicate regularly with employer partner regarding the program and learner status
  • Attend staff development meetings, and other meetings and trainings
  • Attend job fairs and other student recruitment opportunities as requested
  • Participate in community activities, as appropriate
  • Adhere to applicable procedures and policies

Compliance:
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and carefully follows all applicable federal and state compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the Department of Education, accrediting agencies, CIE, and internal UMA policies and procedures.
  • Effectively communicates compliance requirements to students and other staff as appropriate and quickly escalates any compliance concerns to the Compliance department.

Work Experience, Skills & Abilities:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate's degree
  • Two years Level B instructor experience, National Guidelines for Educating EMS Instructors
  • Level A&B coursework, National Guidelines for Educating EMS Instructors, or completion within the first three months of being hired
  • Active Florida Paramedic License
  • Minimum of four years of field level provider experience in prehospital environment with Advanced Life Support provider
  • Able to professionally communicate in verbal and written English
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other business tools such as Skype and Microsoft Teams

  • Bilingual language skills strongly preferred
  • Program administration and/or instructor/EMT supervision strongly preferred

Working Environment:
  • Instructional Environment – Must be able to work in an office, classroom, and laboratory settings, and to visit employer and healthcare facility sites as needed
  • Up to 10% of travel required - Valid Driver’s License required—including travel required to apprentices’ field and internship experiences
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed

Physical Demands:
  • Unimpaired Mobility: Must be able to demonstrate how to respond quickly to ambulance calls, access patients located in difficult terrain and dangerous environments and locations, work in close and dangerous environments, such as damaged vehicles and structures on fire, and carry heavy equipment and patients
  • Physical Abilities: Must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements, including without limitation, lifting and moving of heavy equipment and patients in a variety of environmental and dangerous conditions, perform CPR and other lifesaving maneuvers
  • Fine Motor Skills: Must be able to perform required medical skills and techniques, including without limitation, bandaging, splinting and establishing an IV, performing endotracheal intubation and other advanced airway techniques, manual defibrillation, pleural decompression
  • Vision: Must have correctable vision that permits the reading of gauges, fine print and figures associated with emergent medical care and treatment; and color acuity to differentiate varying colors that may be necessary in providing emergency care and treatment
  • Requires long periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer
