VDOT is seeking a Structure and Bridge Inspector to serve on our Culpeper team performing in-depth visual and mechanical safety inspections of bridges and highway structures maintained by VDOT to ensure that these structures are safe and adequate for use by the traveling public. As an Inspector you will:
  • Perform inspections and assist with in-depth visual and mechanical inspections of bridges and highway structures to discover deterioration, damage and defects.
  • Collect structural data and dimensions of components. Prepare and distribute structural inspection reports and related documentation. Check information in paper and electronic inspection report files and update as necessary.
  • Assist with creation of new inventory records and update existing structure inventory and assessment data in automated database system.
  • Operate specialized inspection equipment and vehicles.
  • Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Ensure workplace safety by identifying workplace hazards and making suggestions for improvement. Wear proper PPE.
  • Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures. Ensure equipment is used properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc.
  • These positions are designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of common bridge types and components.
  • Ability to diagnose causes of damage and deterioration to bridges and structures.
  • Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
  • Ability to use specialized inspection instruments and tools.
  • Ability to prepare reports, enter data, update and maintain files.
  • Ability to prepare and, or draft structural drawings and sketches.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the application of engineering math.
  • Ability to physically perform hands-on inspections of bridges and structures, work at heights, work over or in water, in proximity to moving traffic and in inclement weather
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications
  • Ability to follow safety practices and procedures and use required equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in bridge maintenance and repair or structural inspection.
  • Completion of an FHWA-approved course in safety inspection of in-service bridges.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and CAD.
  • Associate’s degree or coursework in engineering or engineering technology; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree.

Special Requirements
Fingerprint-based criminal history records check required. References, work history, and DMV records verified prior to commencement of employment. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical.

Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, irregular terrain and standing for long periods. Work is completed in, around, and above water, and from varying heights. Must have ability to lift 100 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense. Personal protective equipment is provided.
