Summary of Responsibilities:

This position leads specialized business and technical activities that engage directly with Army scientists, engineers, attorneys and managers to: (i) identify, secure and protect the intellectual property (IP) developed by Army laboratories; (ii) actively market cutting-edge technologies to industry partners and small businesses, venture capitalists, and others to elicit interest in their licensing of technology and other intellectual properties; and (iii) rapidly establish licensing and other collaboration and partnering agreements that support and emphasize the further development and rapid transfer and transition of Army research results to ensure that the benefits of Army research are fielded to the Army and other Department of Defense warfighters. Some travel is required.

Essential Functions:

  • Works directly with existing and potential Army inventors to expeditiously develop detailed and complete invention disclosure information packages
  • Works directly with Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) attorneys to process patent applications, interface with inventors to resolve questions or issues, clarify/refine invention descriptions and statements, and answer questions expeditiously to support issuance of a patent
  • Reviews research protocols and related research documents to identify possible Intellectual Property (IP) that may need to be protected/secured through patents, trademarks, or copyrights
  • Develops and utilizes strategies and resources to effectively map pathways for the efficient potential technology transfer and commercialization of new Army technologies
  • Effectively communicates to internal and external partners; and manages relationships with key stakeholders
  • Develops and provides researchers, as well as Army project, program, and portfolio managers, with comprehensive training and education related to intellectual development and protection
  • Instructs researchers on the importance capturing and documenting new intellectual property before publishing results
  • Assists in planning, development and implementation of strategies for marketing disclosed technologies
  • Determines the appropriate agreements to utilize in commercializing technology, and assists in drafting and negotiating agreements to protect intellectual property
  • Manages a portfolio of technology development projects in partnership with key stakeholders
  • Oversees and manages communication tools for promoting opportunities to external stakeholders to collaborate and partner with Army laboratories, including one or more websites, social media, press announcements, etc.

  • Ability to work independently, and to lead a project and/or inter-organizational team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the full cycle of technology commercialization from end-to-end.
  • Ability to provide independent thought and judgment to support critical activities and objectives.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and maintain professional composure under pressure and dynamic conditions.
  • Ability to adjust to new situations encountered on a daily basis and have the ability to learn new duties quickly.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to seek clarification on project activities.
  • Ability to research and define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field
  • Eight (8) years of experience in technology transfer or related technical field, and a minimum of two years’ experience in technology transfer working actively in support of IP protection, patenting, licensing, and business development for commercialization.
