The Highway Maintenance Worker Technician primarily maintains gravel roads within the county. Incumbents are responsible for performing complex semi-skilled and skilled manual labor by maintaining and repairing County highways, bridges, and other properties. Responsibilities include operating light and heavy equipment in performing maintenance of highways and bridges; performing routine/minor equipment repairs; and assisting in installation of new signs.

• Operates a wide variety of heavy equipment to a varying degree of difficulty, including but not limited to the following: semi-tractor trailer, dump trucks, motor graders, front end loaders, bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, rollers, mowers, asphalt related equipment, and other equipment associated with road and bridge maintenance.
• Responsible for preventive maintenance and upkeep of equipment.
• Participates with other maintenance personnel to perform general labor duties using hand tools including but not limited to: shovels, rakes, post-hole diggers, brooms, scrapers, for use in shop and grounds maintenance, asphalt patching, preparing culvert beds, snow removal, etc.
• Places traffic control signs and devices, assists traffic through work zones as required.
• Operates jackhammers, air compressors, mechanical tampers, power saws, hydraulic drivers and similar equipment.
• Performs related work as required including routine repair and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, buildings and grounds as required.
• Generates detailed electronic daily timecards, material and work reports.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid Class A North Dakota Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
• Successfully pass a DOT medical examination when renewing commercial driver's license required to operate assigned equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Two years of related experience.
• Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations.
• Must have thorough knowledge of methods, material, and equipment necessary for proper road construction and maintenance, basic knowledge of bridge construction, and ability to operate road maintenance and construction equipment.
• Knowledge of the road system and political boundaries of the County.
• Must have reasonable interpersonal communication skills and be able to interact with fellow employees, professional staff, contractors, and the general public.
• Ability to operate various road construction equipment.
