The Housing Counselor provides individual mortgage delinquency and default resolution counseling; financial, budgeting and credit repair workshops; home improvement and rehabilitation counseling; services for homeless counseling; pre-purchase counseling; pre- purchase homebuyer education workshops; rental housing counseling. This position requires the use of independent judgement and decision-making skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Obtain and keep HUD certification as a Housing Counselor
  • Create and ensure completion of a client’s intake file per organizational and Housing & Urban Development (HUD) guidelines
  • Connect with clients and provide a link for the nationwide CMS
  • Counsel and interview clients with respect to their overall financial situation and specific need for assistance
  • Create a sustainable budget and a detailed action plan for all clients
  • Adhere to all guidelines related to the confidentiality of client records and information and requirements per the HUD Housing Counseling Handbook and National Industry Standards for Homebuyer Education and Counseling
  • Proactively manage work load, calendar, outreach, and client appointments to help meet the goals of the organization and serve the client effectively
  • Schedule education workshops and classes (CMS)
  • Build relationships with lenders, realtors, and other organizations/professionals to develop referral sources that offer housing assistance
  • Maintain familiarity with other GSUL programs and offerings
  • Attend webinars and training classes
  • Build collaborative relationships with colleagues and customers representing diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, religions, lifestyles, and viewpoints
  • Be able to work within team structure; and be able to negotiate and manage conflicts
  • Remain knowledge of housing and economic self-sufficiency issues, as well as community resources
  • Ability to perform duties in a confidential manner
  • Be detail oriented with ability to organize complex material and document client interactions in a clear and concise manner

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • HUD Certification for Housing Counseling preferred
  • At least 2 years working with the public and people in need of assistance
  • At least 2 years working with federal and/or non-profit programs
  • Bi-lingual Spanish preferred
  • Strong Google, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Zoom skills
  • Familiarity with CMS and HCS platforms

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $42,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
