Position Title: Advocate

Wage: Starting pay is $18/hour and $20.70/hour for overnight shifts.

Work Site: Daytime & Overnight Shelters @ 54 South Main, Groundworks Shelter, The Chalet and/or Great River Terrace - all in Brattleboro, VT

Reports to: Program Manager

Classification: Full-time, Part-Time or Per Diem

Weekly Hours: 8 to 40 hours per week, opportunities for overtime when available.

Groundworks Collaborative was established in 2015 as a result of the merger of the Brattleboro Area Drop-In Center and Morningside Shelter. We work with people and systems, creating solutions to end hunger and homelessness for all people in our region. Groundworks fosters a team environment that includes a culture of understanding and holds the people we serve in unconditional positive regard without placing blame on the individual client for the vulnerable situation(s) they’re experiencing.

Summary

The Advocate is a frontline staff person in our shelter and housing programs. They are responsible for fostering a healthy and supportive community for and with our clients. Advocates work within a team to manage daily operations and support clients utilizing compassion and a harm reduction approach.

Several of our programs are considered low-barrier spaces and clients may be under the influence of substances. The Advocate needs to balance a firm and direct response in order to maintain safety with an open, welcoming approach to build and maintain relationships with clients. The Advocate is often the first point of contact for the organization, focused on a variety of duties. The right person for this role will thrive in a fast-paced environment—managing challenges while building relationships—and have the support of a terrific team that can always find humor in our work.
