The Pocahontas County Libraries & Visitor Information Centers (PCL & VIC) serve the residents and visitors of Pocahontas County, West Virginia through the main library (the McClintic Library) in the county seat of Marlinton, and four branches in the communities of Hillsboro, Durbin, Green Bank and Linwood. Pocahontas County is rural and mountainous with approximately 75% of its 940 square miles being either National Forest or State Park land. PCL &VIC’s mission is to “fulfill the informational needs of our residents and visitors”. This happens through keeping up-to-date with technology, hosting community events and programs, providing relevant material, both in print and electronically. Our services are free and available to all residents and visitors; regardless of age, race, gender, economic status, religion or political affiliation. We have broad support, with over 48,000 visits to our rural libraries last year. Libraries across the country are changing to meet the needs of their patrons and we are no exception. Children’s programming is an area that has room to grow. Libraries compete with technology and social media for the attention and time of our youth, thus we strive to offer new and inventive ways to reach youth audiences. Children are the future patrons of our libraries and the future leaders and citizens of our communities. By investing in youth by establishing relevant library programming for children and families we not only create meaningful experiences, we strengthen the overall health of our communities.

Member Duties : An AmeriCorps position supports increasing library relevancy, literacy and community development for youth by: • Assessing programming needs with staff at each of the libraries • Assisting to plan and implement programs and adapt for diverse audiences• Marketing programs through press releases, social media and print • Serving with library staff and volunteers to create program sustainability. Program examples include: • Story-time for babies and toddlers • Monthly programs for homeschoolers • Afterschool programs such as: Lego at the library; STEM Club, teen book-club • A summer reading program for all ages. The AmeriCorps member would primarily be based out of the Green Bank Library but would serve with the librarians throughout the county to support programming.
