Job Description

Under the supervision of the Clinical Health Nurse Practitioner Team Supervisor, provides paraprofessional clinic services in the Sexual Health clinic. Sets up and tears down clinic sites, collects patient health histories/risk assessments, takes vital signs, and explains available contraceptive options.

This is a part-time, benefited position working 32 hours a week at the Public Health Location at 12251 James Street, Holland MI. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. no holidays or weekends.


Essential Job Functions

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists nurses, nurse practitioners and/or physicians with client exams or clinical services.
  • Gives an overview of Healthy Michigan Medicaid and refers for enrollment if eligible.
  • Interviews clients to obtain and record pertinent medical, dietary and social history; performs and records patient vital signs; and accurately documents data in the electronic medical record (EMR). Ensures that confidentiality of client information is maintained.
  • Educates sexual health and contraceptive information including reviewing all contraceptive methods available to clients according to established guidelines.
  • May collect blood by venipuncture or capillary sticks from adult and minor clients, using universal precautions. Ensures proper identification, documentation, packaging and processing of lab specimens.
  • Records client laboratory test results and treatment in the EMR and state disease database, Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS) or Evaluation Web System for HIV. Verifies with physician offices that clients and their contacts with a positive communicable disease are informed and treated.
  • Sets up clinic sites for scheduled clinic operations, ensuring that all equipment is operational, all instruments and specimen kits are available, and all other clinic supplies are available.
  • Manages and maintains the inventory control system for clinic operating supplies and equipment, ordering replacement stock as necessary. Conducts monthly year-end inventories of clinic supplies and equipment.
  • Sterilizes clinic instruments and maintains the Autoclave by performing scheduled cleaning and quality assurance. Follows infection control protocols and uses universal precautions.
  • Performs other functions as assigned.

Required Education, Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED and at least one year of post-secondary training in an accredited medical assisting program, combined with two years of progressively responsible and demonstrably successful experience in clinical procedures.

Additional Requirements and Information

The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge and skills:

  • Thorough working knowledge of Medicaid, Title X, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and other federal, state and local statutes and regulations governing eligibility for and delivery of services as well as other community resources available to client populations.
  • Working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and infection control practices and procedures.
  • Good working knowledge of quality assurance and quality control practices and protocols.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles with good interpersonal, oral and written communications skills including computer literacy.
  • Thorough working knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements governing the confidentiality of patient health information, including the provisions of HIPAA.
  • Knowledge of the cultural and ethnic groups represented in Ottawa County and cultural norms affecting health maintenance and health care.
  • Ability to interact positively with clients, co-workers, health care providers from widely diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Note : Individuals in this classification provide services to clients in a variety of locations throughout the County are responsible for providing their own transportation.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Michigan driver's license and must be insurable to operate a vehicle under the county's current automobile insurance policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have sufficient manual dexterity to perform venipuncture and properly process and package specimens.
  • Must be able to transport, set up and tear down equipment weighing up to 25 lbs in order to set up clinic sites.
  • Must be able to wear all protective clothing, including masks and gloves.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in clinics and the Health Department laboratory. Collection of blood and other specimens from patients entails potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and a variety of other disease vectors.
