SUMMARY:
Under day to day work coordination of the school nurse and direction and an site administrator, the Health Assistant provides health support services to students at school sites. The duties assigned are routine in nature involving the completion of standardized forms for record-keeping and the providing of basic first aid and health services following standardized procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organizes and maintains student health and emergency records, including medication logs; records testing information in student files.
  • Reviews immunization and first grade physical records; coordinates compliance needs with families.
  • Prepares lists of students with identified health problems, obtains individual emergency health plans, and distributes information to site administrator while maintaining such information in a central location.
  • Investigates student complaints of illness and takes appropriate action according to established guidelines.
  • Reports confirmed or suspected communicable diseases and/or illnesses to the school nurse and site administrator; reports suspected cases of child abuse to the site administrator and appropriate agency.
  • Screens for head lice and maintains records for follow-up purposes.
  • May perform specialized health care procedures under supervision of the school nurse as necessary.
  • Prepares and maintains a log of daily activities of all student visits to the health office.
  • Administers first aid as appropriate within the guidelines of the American Red Cross to children who are ill or injured during school hours.
  • Administers medication to students as specified by appropriate completed district permission forms and under the supervision of the school nurse.
  • Coordinates and assists the school nurse and office staff with mandated health and dental screenings; records results and distributes information to the appropriate parties.
  • Consults with the school nurse to obtain appropriate community health resources.
  • Provides information on community health resources to families; follows up on referrals.
  • Orders supplies; prepares and maintains/restocks current-date first aid kits for site and for field trips as appropriate.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly school health station, ensures availability of adequate and unexpired supplies (e.g. first aid kit, gloves, bandages, school.
  • Ensures secure storage and refrigeration if required, of all medications (e.g., insulin, EpiPen, seizure medications, etc.) authorized to be kept in the health office.
  • Compiles and provides information for state, federal and district reporting purposes as necessary.
  • Obtains and/or completes student accident reports; distributes to appropriate parties.
  • Maintains and manages documentation of state-mandated health requirements including entering and retrieving health-related information in a computerized database.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: (At time of application.)
KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Standard health problems associated with school-age children.
  • Basic office practices, standard office equipment including assigned computer and recordkeeping.
  • Available community health resources.
  • Classroom and family dynamics relevant in responding to health needs of students.
  • Basic medical equipment and procedures such as taking temperature and blood pressure, providing first aid and CPR, using insulin pump, EpiPen, etc.

ABILITY TO:

  • Plan, organize and prioritize work within established timelines.
  • Lift and to maintain physical mobility and stamina in carrying out the responsibilities assigned.
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Learn (willing to learn) and carry out medical procedures correctly as necessary.
  • Organize and maintain an effective record-keeping system.
  • Operate computerized database programs and other standard office equipment.
  • Make simple arithmetical calculations.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Work cooperatively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Work with frequent interruptions and adjust priorities based on presented situations.
  • Assess situations quickly and accurately and make appropriate judgments and take corrective actions in accordance with established protocols, procedures and practices.
  • Work independently with little supervision.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two year of experience working with school-age children or in a health field. California certification as a qualified medical assistant or nurse assistant may substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Possession of CPR certificate and Red Cross Basic First Aid certificate at time of hire and maintained thereafter as an ongoing condition of employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS(Must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.)

  • Speak, read and understand sufficiently to successfully receive/provide information to/from students, supervisors, co-workers, the public, etc.
  • Operate basic equipment such as the telephone, copier, computer, etc., except where incidental to the position.
  • Sufficient strength and agility to perform physical tasks required by the position.
  • May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and minor contagious illnesses such as colds, flu, conjunctivitis, head lice, etc., that may occasionally appear in a school environment.
  • Perform all duties listed on the job description contained in the Essential Duties and Responsibilities ted above.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $20.69 - $34.98 per hour
