JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: LEAD Guidance Counselor

REPORTS TO: Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree in School Counseling

Valid South Carolina School Counselor Certificate

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and present School-wide training;
  • Knowledge of high school guidance and curriculum;
  • Knowledge of credit accrual in high school;
  • Strong organizational, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrates professional and responsible work habits;
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
  • Uses professional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills ;
  • Computer knowledge in district student management systems, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of three years counseling experience in the public/charter school setting

PURPOSE:

Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, the lead guidance counselor will coordinate the implementation of the guidance and counseling program at Greg Mathis Charter High School. The comprehensive program will address academic, attendance, behavior, career, and personal/social development for all students by promoting student success, providing preventive services, and responding to identified student needs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Guidance:

  • Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions.
  • Implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed;
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs;
  • Promotes and participates in the College/Career Night activities
  • Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, goals, and plans.
  • Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
  • Assists with post-secondary planning and implementation;
  • Assists with post-secondary education funding options and financial aid;

Consultation:

  • Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs;
  • Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational planning.
  • Represents the School as a liaison with community agencies;

Assessment:

  • Assists teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data;
  • Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services;
  • Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data;
  • Accept and act on referrals from students, parents, teachers, and administrators;
  • Check student transcripts for correct course placement and accuracy to ensure that state and district requirements are fulfilled before graduation;
  • Maintain academic records to include transcripts labels, cumulative folders, four-year plans, and other records as required by the principal.
  • Conducts all state testing and required district testing
  • Coordinates student and staff surveys for school

Administration:

  • Uses data in planning and developing a comprehensive guidance and counseling program in relation to the needs of the students being served
  • Assists in the identification and implementation of interventions to enhance student success and reduce the dropout rates;
  • Assists with the supervision of student records and transcripts to ensure compliance as per state and federal regulations;
  • Assists with the monitoring/mentoring of the transition counselor;
  • Establish a planning calendar for activities

Policy, Reports and Law

  • Supports the goals and objectives of Greg Mathis Charter High School.
  • Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, policies, regulations and ethical standards of the school counseling profession;
  • Commits to current professional standards of competence and practice.
  • Promotes and follows ethical standards for school counselors, including confidentiality.
  • Commits to professional development to improve knowledge and skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises assigned counseling clerical employee(s)

Physical and Mental Job Requirements:

  • Maintains emotional control under stress; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; occasional travel

Other:

  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned by the principal.

Evaluation:

  • SCDE ADEPT Evaluation System- SAFE-T

Terms of Employment

  • 230 days
  • Salary to be established by the Board of Trustees
