PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Scripps College honors diversity, equity, justice, inclusion, and access as key components of our community. As the Scripps Office of Admission continues its planning, implementation, and evaluation of the College’s admission diversity and access initiatives, goals, and strategies, it has recognized a need to research and reconnect with the local Southern California area. Under the guidance of the Strategic Diversity Initiatives Team, the selected fellow will conduct active, hands-on research to develop relationships with key stakeholders in the Southern California region including secondary education educators, community-based leaders, and peer recruitment professionals.

The emphasis of this fellowship is applied research with a focus on demographics, higher education pipelines, and relationship building with educators in Southern California.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • The Graduate Fellow will work up to 20 hours per week for 6 months, in a hybrid position.
  • The Graduate Fellow will have access to College resources, such as select data, key individuals and groups, etc.
  • The Graduate Fellow is expected to provide documentation of time and activities during the fellowship and a written summary research report. Fellowship includes the following components:
  • Exposure to enrollment leadership and JEDI based decision making
  • Regional research with focus on demographic shifts in secondary education
  • Assist in identifying key stakeholders and help to facilitate relationship building sessions
  • Responsibility and oversight for specific projects
  • Will receive professional development and professional ethics
  • The overall structure of the fellowship opportunity is designed to allow the fellow to observe, learn, and do. Therefore, we are seeking an individual who has existing knowledge and experience in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion and leadership in college access.
  • Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.
  • In order for the College to be able to respond to emergencies and support our community, it is the expectation of the College that in your role you will be prepared to pivot to support students and College operations as needed. The College reserves the right to ask you to perform duties outside your traditional roles to support the College as it responds to student and operational needs. Scripps is a small liberal arts College and, therefore, all employees are prepared to support wherever needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Demonstrated commitment and record of research and leadership experience in the areas of racial justice, diversity, equity, college access, and inclusion.
  • Willingness to work closely with the Scripps Enrollment team.
  • Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work independently, as well as with a team.
  • Ability to take initiative, manage a variety of tasks, and see projects through to completion.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Must be currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral level graduate program in the areas of education, sociology, counseling, or a comparable field.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:
This is a temporary, part-time, 20 hours per week, non-benefits-eligible, non-exempt position.

This position is expected end on or before February 1, 2023.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
None.

Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.

At-Will Employment
Regular employment at the College is for no specified period of time; conditions and status of employment (hours, pay, title, duties, etc.) are subject to change at any time. Scripps College is an At-Will employer. Employees, and likewise the College, are free to end the employment relationship at any time, for any reason, with or without notice or cause, unless otherwise prohibited by law.

With the goal of providing the safest campus possible for our community, the College is requiring faculty and staff to have their COVID-19 vaccines up to date within two weeks of hire date or within two weeks of when employee becomes eligible to receive a booster, whichever is later. The College considers a vaccine to be up to date if (i) the individual has previously received two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine and receives either a third dose of one of those vaccines or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or (ii) the individual has previously received one dose the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and receives either a second dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or one dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. Exemptions for documented medical reasons or a sincerely held religious belief may be requested.
