The Food Service Worker I works a rotating shift at Rusk State Hospital.

The Food Service Worker I does routine entry-level food service work on a
designated part-time shift in a satellite area and/or Central Kitchen under the
general supervision of the designated supervisor. Work involves preparing,
portioning, distributing and serving food for regular and therapeutic diets;
cleaning and sanitation of equipment, work areas, dishes, utensils, pots and
pans. Other duties may be required that are reasonably related to the essential
or marginal functions of the position. Maintains sufficient knowledge of duties
and related work to satisfy the requirements of the job. Handles food in
accordance with federal, state and HACCP guidelines. Follows safety
procedures and practices for kitchen and food service work. Works under close
supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and judgment. Must
understand that duties, location of work and shift patterns are subject to
change as determined to meet the needs of this facility. May work unusual or
extended hours in the event of a disaster and/or operational necessity.

Must understand that the duties may include exposure to blood or other
potential infectious materials.


Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Maintains a clean and sanitary work area, following departmental sanitation guidelines.

Serves meals to patients following menu guides and diet instructions.

Prepares food items in the dining room for patient meals, snacks and feedings following all departmental guidelines concerning preparation and sanitation.

Assist stock clerks in receiving deliveries to food service department.

Performs all lifting aspects of job duties as needed.

Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.


Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of food preparation methods.

Skill in the operation, cleaning, and sanitizing of food service appliances and equipment.

This position requires the physical ability to: a) walk or stand for considerable lengths of time; b) pull, bend and lift; c) read and understand diet cards, menus, and chemical labels and to follow oral and/or written instructions and/or procedures.

Ability to prepare and serve food; to clean dining room area, serving and food preparation areas; and to maintain basic records.

Ability to read, write and perform basic math computations.

Ability to physically perform Treatment Intervention and Preventative Strategies (TIPS)

None.


Initial Selection Criteria:
Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

ServSafe food handlers course must be completed within ninety (90) days of hire.

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

Salary Note: The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary range.
