Position Summary

Stratolaunch is a technology accelerator that engineers operationally realistic testing at Mach 5+. Our air-launched, Talon testbeds are reusable, cost-effective platforms that enable routine access to the hypersonic environment. We deliver flight data critical to validating system performance and achieving rapid technology deployment. Together with our customers, we drive innovations that are imperative to advancing national security.


As a Flight Engineer, you will serve as a required crewmember on board the Experimental Stratolaunch Carrier Aircraft, the world’s largest wingspan aircraft. You will play a lead role in system design and operational use decisions, and act as a part of a 3-person crew during developmental flight test of the Carrier Aircraft and air-launch test missions. You should possess knowledge of common aircraft systems, and the curiosity and capability to work with design engineers, using design-level schematics, to understand and solve technical problems. You should possess considerable experience in conducting disciplined, effective developmental flight test, or similar experience in a technically demanding environment. You must establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues on a small, agile design-to-flight team. You will be challenged with bringing unique and complex aircraft from initial flight to operational use, at a company that believes in giving our team members the authority and responsibility to succeed.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Flight Engineer serves as a required crewmember on board the M351 Stratolaunch Carrier Aircraft during developmental flight test and missions involving captive carriage or release of air-launched hypersonic test vehicles.


DUTIES TO INCLUDE

  • Operation and monitoring of multiple aircraft subsystems
  • Execution of normal and emergency procedures
  • Communication with other aircrew as well as ground control teams
  • Test vehicle monitoring, systems control and launch operations
  • Development of relevant procedures, aircraft systems, and documentation
  • Participation in design and analysis reviews
  • Preparation of system test plans and flight test cards
  • Maintain Flight Engineer crewmember currency with the use of simulators and/or flying aircraft
  • Occasional travel in support of program development, training, and operations
  • Irregular work hours to support ground and flight test schedule


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Hold FAA Flight Engineer Certificate with Turbojet Class Rating
    or Applicant must have passed the Flight Engineer Turbojet (FEX) written exam as per 14 CFR 63.35 (a) and 14 CFR §63.35 (b)
  • Meet the Flight Engineer candidacy requirements as per 14 CFR §63.31 (a-d)
  • FAA Second Class Medical Certificate
  • Have familiarity with applicable FARs including Part 25, 63, 91, and 125
  • Possess FAA high altitude endorsement, or equivalent military training, or be able to complete altitude training, IAW FAA order 3150.1C.
  • Be independent and motivated; able to research and study complex systems with preliminary or incomplete design or operational documentation
  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Have the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have the ability to lift objects and manipulate overhead controls from a seated position
  • Must have the ability to work in cramped, confined cockpit environments in both hot and cold environments for up to 8 hours with limited movement. Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as instructed, to include flight helmet, oxygen mask and backpack parachute, and have the ability to egress cockpit area up to 10 feet off the ground via rope.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 500 hours flight time serving as Flight Engineer on a transport category (121/125) or equivalent aircraft
  • Commercial multi-engine pilot certificate
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • Graduate of an SETP-recognized Test Pilot School
  • Experience with developmental flight test, aircraft development, and aircraft certification
  • Control room/console experience
  • Aircraft systems integration/testing experience
  • Familiarity with rocket propellant operations and control systems

  • This position is located in Mojave, CA
  • Frequent travel required to Washington D.C., Mojave Spaceport, and other domestic locations

Mojave Air & Spaceport is located 95 miles north of Los Angeles. Theme parks are in abundance, with Six Flags Magic Mountain, Disneyland, and Knotts Berry Farm ready to meet the needs of rollercoaster thrill seekers.


Food and drink fanatics are in a haven of delectable choices. Wine aficionados will also find easy access to some of the state’s best vino in Paso Robles, Santa Ynez, and even more locally in Tehachapi and Agua Dulce. Beer fanatics will find some of the best West Coast IPAs at Bravery and Lucky Luke’s in Lancaster.
