Broadband Fellow

This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable.

Fellows receive housing, a $1150 monthly living stipend and a $500 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats.

Title: Broadband Fellow

Organization Description: As the only consumer protection organization in the state, the Alaska Public Interest Research Group (AKPIRG) is a non-profit, non-partisan, citizen-oriented organization that researches, educates, and advocates for public and consumer interests. AKPIRG is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit organization first incorporated in 1974. AKPIRG’s goals are to:

Advocate economic fairness for all Alaskans.

Support informed civic engagement to sustain democracy.

Promote transparent and accountable government.

Advocate for public and consumer interests.

Position Description: With millions of dollars entering the state of Alaska for the internet without prior infrastructure, technical knowledge, or public participation it is now critical to create opportunities for digital equity. AKPIRG believes it is important to be present and, when necessary, hold government and businesses of power accountable to ensure they are working in the public interest with transparency.

This position offers a Fellow the opportunity to become an expert on the workings and personnel of Alaska Broadband systems and policies, becoming a critical source of information for AKPIRG and partner organizations. This work be conducted with the supervision of AKPIRG and Native Movement’s Broadband Specialist, Brittany Woods-Orrison.

To this end, the Fellow’s duties will include:

  • Building a broadband directory through power mapping and strengths assessment
  • Track ongoing policy and legislative matters
  • Supporting AKPIRG Communications and outreach
  • Assist in developing digital equity programs and processes in Alaska
  • Support the Alaska Just Transition Collectivein various state-wide convenings
  • Other duties as needed to support the Broadband Specialist

Qualifications:

  • Takes initiative
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize information
  • Willing to learn about these issues and share out simultaneously
  • Communications experience
  • Commitment to accountability, transparency, and building a more just society for Alaska
  • Preferably already lives in or has some connection to Alaska

Work Authorization: This host organization is not able to sponsor HB1 visas at this time.
