Summary:
The Engineer II is responsible for operating and maintaining all of the Facilities electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Such systems include Gas Steam Generating Boilers (125 psig), Steam Distribution and Condensate Return, Domestic Hot and Cold Water, HVAC Air Handling System, air cooled Centrifugal Chilled Water units, Vacuum and Medical Gas units, Electrical Power (600 volts and less) and Lighting, Standby Electrical Generating Unit, liquid and solid waste disposal, and pneumatic control systems.

In addition, the Engineer II is responsible for maintaining selected Support equipment and systems unique to a hospital environment. Such systems include steam operated sterilizers, cart washer, surgical tables and lights, washer extractors, dryers, and ironer/folder, and food service equipment.

The Engineer II is also responsible for maintaining the hospital vehicles, the Grounds Irrigation System, and for the repair of sidewalks and parking lots, the interior building system, including door hardware, furniture, casework, floors, walls and ceilings.
Position Reports To: Engineering Director
Essential Functions:
  • Inspects facility equipment and systems.
    • Performs inspections, being alert to visual, audio and temperature abnormalities.
    • Monitors and records operating conditions.
    • Notes changes in operating conditions from previous recordings and adjusts devices to establish equilibrium.
    • Documents the corrective action taken on the appropriate log sheets.
  • Repairs mechanical devices and systems.
    • Applies troubleshooting techniques to determine the problem.
    • Dismantles the device as necessary, repairs or replaces components.
    • Reassembles, reinstalls, and functionally tests the device or system to verify operation.
    • Documents the time and material expended to complete the repair.
  • Repairs electrical and electronic devices, equipment and systems.
    • Applies troubleshooting techniques using test instruments to isolate the problem.
    • Dismantles, cleans, replaces, repairs and reassembles the unit.
    • Adjusts, calibrates and functionally tests the device, equipment or system to verify operation.
    • Documents the time and material expended to complete the repair.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on facility and support equipment.
    • Follows established procedures when performing preventative maintenance.
    • Performs electrical safety testing.
    • Documents tasks performed.
  • Services and repairs plumbing systems and equipment.
  • Minor repairs nurse call and code blue stations and interfaces connections.
  • Functionally tests the Emergency Electrical System.
    • Follows established procedures and scheduled frequencies.
    • Operates the Standby Emergency Generator Set under load by manipulating the various electrical transfer switches.
  • Assures that the hospital vehicles are properly maintained and regularly serviced.
  • Keeps the Facilities sidewalks, ramps and parking lots in good repair and appropriately striped and signed.
  • Installs electrical, hydraulic and mechanical finish hardware. Install locks and cuts keys. Documents keys distribution per established key control procedure.
  • Fabricates, assembles, modifies and installs casework.
    • Per approved shop drawings.
    • Works with all of the materials common in the Carpentry and Millworker trades.
    • Repairs casework and furniture.
  • Assembles and repairs concrete, block and drywall systems.
  • Repairs and installs resilient flooring and suspended ceiling systems.
  • Repairs and fabricates ferrous and non-ferrous components and assemblies.
    • Uses gas welding, brazing, and mechanical fastening techniques and metalworking skills.
    • Develops layouts from sketches, written and verbal instructions.
    • Determines and accumulates the material required for the task.
    • Documents the time and material costs to complete the task.
  • Shares responsibility with the other engineers for maintaining established spare parts, tools and material needs.
    • Utilizes manufacturer’s spare parts lists and establishes standards to select part numbers, size, type and material.
    • Follows established procedures for ordering parts and materials.
  • Performs Engineer I Duties and Responsibilities as may be assigned or required. Assists Engineer I in the performance of duties by sharing experience, technique, knowledge and work methods.
  • Complies with established department policies, procedures and operating methods.
    • Adheres to the Safety policies and procedures established for the work.
    • Is “Safety-aware”
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Department Director or his Designate.

Position Requirements:

Qualifications:
Required:
  • High school graduate
  • Three or more years training in a Technical Training Program, industry or Armed Forces with emphasis in the mechanical, electrical, carpentry, painting or metalworking trades
  • One or more years in a hospital environment performing Engineer II duties, or three years on the job training and experience with progressive responsibility in hospital maintenance.
  • Experience in detecting subtle changes in equipment operation characteristics.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical and shop drawings, writing diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to use math to determine electrical, mechanical and physical equations.
  • Working knowledge of Steam Generation and Distribution Systems, HVAC Systems, Plumbing Systems, Electrical Distribution Systems and building construction.
  • Must possess basic computer skills related to Windows navigation, mouse usage, keyboarding, email communication and password management.
