Major Functions: Responsible, specialized clerical work involving the processing of applications and maintaining exemptions on the tax roll. Provides exemption information and assistance to taxpayers by telephone, by correspondence and in person as well as review and research as to eligibility of applicants for exemptions. Our department has a high volume fast-paced environment. In addition, we have knowledge of what each area of the property appraisers office does as well as other departments throughout the county & cities.

Illustrative Duties:

  • Assist the public via phone, mail, email, and in person in the application process of filing for homestead and other exemptions.
  • Must develop a basic understanding of instruments of transfer to determine ownership types.
  • Must develop a basic understanding of Save Our Homes (SOH), Amendment 1, and in county portability.
  • Review application and information provided by applicants and from other sources to determine eligibility of applicants for exemption purposes.

Utilizes internet and in-house tools to assist in the determining the eligibility of exemptions applied for.

  • Scan and sort all applications and documents received by our office.

Responsible for entering data into the computer assisted mass appraisal (CAMA) system.

  • Collects, reviews, and distributes all mail to each department within the Property Appraiser’s office.
  • Processes address change requests.
  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Location: Floater for our 4 locations (Deland, Orange City, Holly Hill and New Smyrna Bch)

Hours of work: 40-hour work week
8 hours per day: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (5 days a week with 1 hour lunch break.
OR after completing a 1 year probationary period.
10 hours per day: 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 4-day workweek with 1/2-hour lunch break. Days off would be Monday, Wednesday or
Friday.

Minimum Requirements: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and one (1) year of clerical or customer service experience. A comparable amount of education, training or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

Should be familiar with and able to use standard office software/equipment including Microsoft Word and Excel. Must possess the personality and temperament necessary for working under stress in dealing with the public.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of modern office procedures and practices as they relate to an appraisal office.
  • Basic knowledge of website contents, maps and the ability to assist customers with questions.
  • Ability to scan and index all documents processed by our office to their respective parcel.
  • Knowledge of basic business writing rules and the ability to compose simple letters or emails.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to provide quality customer service.
  • Ability to learn and apply Florida laws, rules and statutory regulations governing property exemptions.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

All employees of the Volusia County Property Appraisers office may be called upon to assist in a declared emergency situation (i.e. Hurricane, Tornado, Fire and etc.).

Physical Demands: Mostly sedentary work. Ability to see, hear, talk; ability to move from one part of office to another independently, finger dexterity.
Environmental Demands: Inside work.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend legal and technical documents, manuals and procedures; legal descriptions, maps; memos, reports, safety procedures, instructions. Ability to perform general mathematical functions. Ability to speak clearly and concisely relaying technical information to laymen. Ability to write letters, reports, summaries relaying information, data and details.
