Job Description

Under general supervision, works at assigned Environmental Sustainability Centers (ESC) and screens and sorts hazardous waste for the senior site attendant or Hazardous Waste Maintenance Worker to classify and place in proper containers for transportation and disposal. Notifies Senior Site Attendant and Environmental Sustainability Technician when the ESC’s need materials and supplies to operate safely and efficiently. Additionally, receives recyclable and hazardous wastes from individual customers and small businesses qualifying as Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQG). Sorts and stores non-hazardous household wastes and classifies and stores hazardous wastes in an appropriate storage area. Maintains the Environmental Sustainability Centers in a neat, clean, and organized condition.

This is a part-time, benefitted position working 20-24 hours per week, with the need to work some Saturday mornings. The schedule is yet to be determined. The position is based at two of the Environmental Sustainability (ES) Center but frequent travel to any of other ES Centers maybe required.


Essential Job Functions

T h e e s s en t i a l f u n c t i o n s of t h i s p o s i t i on i n c l u d e, b ut a r e not li m it e d t o, t he f o l l o w i n g :
  • Opens, closes, and staffs the Environmental Sustainability Centers during scheduled operating hours.
  • Receives recyclable, household waste, and food compost from customers, assists customers in unloading recyclables from their vehicles, and placing materials in appropriate receptacles.
  • Screens recyclables to remove wastes that the Center does not accept and refers customers to sites that accept the materials in question.
  • Assists customers in operating the used motor oil-recycling depot and other services provided at the site.
  • Maintains a daily log of site activity and the types and volume of recyclable wastes received.
  • Sells Environmental Sustainability memberships to residential households, receipts payments, and logs customer name and money received.
  • Receives household and small business hazardous wastes into the center.
  • Classifies and segregates hazardous wastes as corrosives, poisons, and flammables makes sure they are in substance appropriate containers and that containers are properly sealed and labeled, logs source and nature of hazardous materials, and places them in the proper storage area.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and requests for assistance and provides educational items and other media maintained at the centers and refers customers to other sites and services.
  • Follows standard operating procedures and protocols to clean up small hazardous waste spills at the center if one were to occur.
  • Removes snow and ice from walkways, stairs, accessways, and other areas of the site, to ensure that customers can safely access the site and its services.
  • Provide feedback and needs from residents to Senior Site Attendant and ES Tech for the growth and improvement of the centers/program.
  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety protocols and procedures.
  • Helps support an equitable, safe, diverse, and inclusive workplace.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED combined with one year of progressively responsible employment in a position requiring customer service skills. Must be able to successfully complete training for and obtain 24-hour HAZWOPER certification within 90 days of the date of hire.

Licenses and Certifications:
Must be able to possess and maintain valid 24-hour HAZWOPER certification.


Additional Requirements and Information

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Reading proficiency in order to read and comprehend written instructions, labels on recyclable materials, and hazardous waste containers, MSDS data sheets on other notices.
  • General mathematical skills in order to record weights and volumes of solid and liquid materials received.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures for processing hazardous materials into the center.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and alone.
  • Commitment to providing quality service to customers.
  • Ability to interact positively and constructively with customers, supervisors, waste haulers, and members of the general public with widely diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and varying levels of communication skills.
P hysical Requirements:
  • Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to read markings on recyclable materials and labels on hazardous waste containers.
  • Must be able to descend to and ascend from floor and ground level to remove litter and contain small spills.
  • Must have sufficient strength to remove snow from walkways and other areas with manual shovels as well as with snow blowers.
  • Must be able to move recyclable containers weighing up to 50 lbs with or without mechanical or other assistance.
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, and other airborne contaminants, as well as inclement weather.
  • Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment.

W orking Conditions:
While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is at risk of exposure to hazardous materials, although actual exposure is normally limited to small spills in the center and the employee follows standard safety protocols. Personal Protection Equipment is provided.
