THE DIVISION
DCR’s Division of Soil and Water Conservation staff administer nonpoint source pollution control programs required by state law. They include nutrient management, agricultural best management practices, resource management planning, shoreline erosion advice, and the administrative, technical and financial support of Virginia’s 47 soil and water conservation districts. The staff also administers the Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) dam safety program through which 12 districts are helped with the upkeep of 104 dams. Staff members in the central office and seven regional offices deliver services through soil and water conservation districts, local governments and nonprofit groups, businesses and citizens. DSWC staff in Richmond also serve as a resource for field staff.

THE WORK UNIT

The Office of Environmental Education provides increased opportunities for public education programs on environmental issues. The Office shall initiate and supervise programs designed to educate citizens on ecology, pollution and its control, technology and its relationship to environmental problems and their solutions, population and its relationship to environmental problems, and other matters concerning environmental quality. The Office of Environmental Education shall develop and implement environmental education programs and the Virginia Strategic Plan for environmental literacy in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Science Museum of Virginia STEM program, and other relevant stakeholders."
THE OPPORTUNITY
This position is responsible for the development and implementation of environmental education programs for K-12 aged children, to develop a Virginia Strategic Plan for environmental literacy in collaboration with assigned partners, provide a depot of resources for environmental education, provide assistance to community organizations related to environmental literacy education, manage assigned grants and provide technical assistance to stakeholders that provide MWEE to school-aged children throughout Virginia, and support the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement Stewardship and Environmental Literacy Goals.

WE WILL BE HIRING TWO PLANNERS FROM THIS RECRUITMENT .


Minimum Qualifications
  • College degree related to environmental education, ecology, natural resource/conservation management or a combination of training and experience to provide the needed knowledge and abilities. Or college degree in training or professional development or a combination of training and experience to provide the needed knowledge and abilities with “hands-on” agricultural/conservation experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of teaching or training principles and practices
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a curriculum
  • Strategic Plan development, program or project management experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Competency in Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Grant project management experience

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with children aged K-12.

  • Valid VA Driver’s License or ability to attain required.
