VDOT’s Culpeper District Location and Design section is seeking a qualified Engineering Technician. This position will support improvements to the State Transportation System by preparing and reviewing highway plans for the acquisition of Right of Way and Construction or reconstruction of road facilities. The qualified candidate will:
  • Utilize 3D CAD software to prepare design and plan assemblies for roadway design projects.
  • Assist in the development of detailed roadway construction estimates.
  • Assist in the development of roadway construction and maintenance contracts.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include:
  • Knowledge of standard drafting methods and procedures and roadway engineering design principles.
  • Skill in the use of CADD software and other design or engineering software.
  • Ability to make mathematical and algebraic computations.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical plans and specifications.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Civil Engineering, Mathematics and or Computer Technologies degree preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree
  • Experience in roadway design and technical drafting,
  • Basic knowledge of construction and maintenance contract policies and procedures including Virginia’s Procurement Act and permits related to construction and maintenance activities.
  • Experience with Bentley OpenRoads Designer or Autocad Civil 3D.

Special Requirements
VDOT is an emergency response agency, therefore, you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations when services are needed.

References and work history will be verified. Fingerprint based criminal history records check required. DMV record will be verified prior to employment.
