OVERVIEW

Boston Green Academy, an innovative “in-district” charter school within the Boston Public Schools, is seeking to hire a committed, skilled, and inspiring Coordinator of Green Careers and Civic Engagement (Managerial Tier B). BGA is committed to preparing all students to succeed in college and 21st century careers and to be leaders in the sustainability of our community and world. Located in the historic Taft Building in Brighton, BGA serves over 500 diverse and amazing students in grades 6-12 from all over the City of Boston.

The Coordinator will link their passion for the environment with a commitment to community, climate and justice, and youth empowerment and will supervise our green internship and community service programs, as well as support our Career Technical Education (CTE) program in Environmental Science. The Coordinator position is supervised by and reports to BGA’s Director of Green Programs and will effectively serve as the co-leader of Green Programming at BGA across a broad range of efforts. The position will be part of BGA’s Administrative Team and is expected to coordinate with the school’s guidance and career counseling/pathways, student development teams, and strategic external partners.

This role is a full time Managerial, Tier B position.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage BGA’s career exposure and training program from middle through high school, with significant emphasis on high school internship placements, career panels and events, job shadowing, and apprenticeships that open their eyes to jobs and fields they may not have even known existed, while helping to advocate for and pioneer unique approaches to shaping and supporting high school interns, especially for BIPOC and special education students.
  • Work across grade level teams to manage a continuum of community and civic engagement opportunities from 6th to 12th grade, framed as service learning, experiential education, and social innovation projects developed in partnership with community organizations.
  • Participate with and leverage partnerships, networks, and thought leaders in key green career, civic engagement, youth development, and sustainability spaces in Boston and beyond, helping to position BGA as a leader in cultivating green leaders and changemakers.

TASKS AND DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Coordinating and supporting BGA’s Senior Internship program, with the entire senior class (60+ students) required to complete six-week internships during Term 4 of their senior year..
  • Engaging, persuading, and supporting professionals and organizations to host high school students, while ensuring their internship experiences and projects are high quality and properly structured for optimal student growth and challenge.
  • Ensuring compliance for all Career and Technical Education students with specified DESE guidelines for non-cooperative education work-based learning Chapter 74 CTE programs.
  • Learning from and collaborating with BGA’s Green Programs Director to stay abreast of trends and opportunities with green career pathways, fundamental green skill sets, and related emerging trends and fields.
  • Reshaping and rethinking BGA’s approach to green career readiness and meaningful life goals, particularly in a way that better incorporates earlier grades and takes advantage of BGA’s full range of grade levels (middle and high school).
  • Strengthening and organizing BGA’s civic engagement and service learning programming while developing systems, together with BGA teachers, to track, encourage, and incentivize going above and beyond minimum graduation service requirements.
  • Building key institutional partnerships for carefully matched community service efforts.
  • Coordinating with BGA colleagues to report, capture, document, and communicate success stories and impacts of our internship and civic engagement efforts.
  • Assisting students in articulating life/career goals that are honed and revised throughout service and career exploration opportunities, in coordination with BGA’s guidance team.
  • Being available to facilitate and lead classes such as workshops, seminars, and other modules targeted at both students and faculty/staff.
  • Returning to campus in August for pre-service training and preparation of the forthcoming school year with the Admin Team
  • Serving as an Advisor, meeting daily and communicating regularly with families of a small group of students (~8-10), providing support with academic and social/emotional needs.
  • Ensuring students graduate from BGA with well-curated professional “green” portfolios.
  • Contributing to the planning and management of related career and green events at BGA (e.g., assemblies, fairs, and guest speakers) as well as field trips and site visits.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, and MINDSETS SOUGHT:

  • Experience and a high comfort level with, and enduring/demonstrated commitment to, BIPOC communities and youth.
  • Ability to connect with urban youth and tailor to their needs and sense of agency.
  • Highly capable with / a quick learner with regards to technology.
  • Teaching, group facilitation, counseling, coaching, case management, and/or experiential/outdoor education experience.
  • Mindset of flexibility, creativity, and innovation, rather than blind adherence to standard recipes, protocols, and traditions.
  • Experience hosting and managing interns, job shadows, and volunteers is considered a major plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
Compensation:
  • All teachers and staff at BGA will receive excellent salaries and benefits as employees of the Boston Public Schools with stipends available for additional responsibilities
  • Terms for this position: BPS Managerial, Tier B
