JOB DESCRIPTION – TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN / ELECTRICIAN

NATURE OF WORK

Technical responsibility for providing the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals and associated electronic equipment and devices is the primary function of this position. Responsibility for maintaining the electrical infrastructure of all City owned buildings, facilities, and grounds is performed as needed. Work is performed under the general direction of the Traffic Division Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK (May not include all duties performed)

Perform Signal preventive maintenance procedures to ensure the reliability of signal operations.
Respond to and resolve emergency maintenance issues regarding faulty signal operations.
Mark the location of underground traffic signal and City owned street lighting wires.
Installs, repairs, and maintains the electrical and video surveillance equipment within the City's operated facilities.
Electrician duties as directed.
May fill in for City Electrical inspector as needed.

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

Ability to effectively troubleshoot electrical systems and equipment including medium and low voltage.
Substantial knowledge of the principles and practices of electronics, traffic control and State and Federal traffic control device standards.
Considerable knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and the National Electrical Code (NEC).
Ability to read wiring plans, specifications and blueprints accurately.
Considerable knowledge of the appropriate practices and procedures used in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems including medium and low voltage.
Substantial knowledge of the methods used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic control signals, vehicle detection devices, and streetlights.
Ability to maintain legible, accurate, written and computerized records and develop reports.Must be familiar with use of personal computer and associated software (i.e.: Excel, MS Office).
Ability to communicate and establish effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, vendors and the general public.
Ability to provide 24/7 emergency response and repair of traffic signals and city owned streetlights.
