SUMMARY:

Algonquin Books is looking for a proactive, collaborative Editorial Assistant to support the Publisher/Editorial Director and the rest of editorial team. Algonquin is a literary imprint of Hachette Books devoted to award-winning and bestselling narrative nonfiction and fiction and the discovery of new voices. An imprint of Workman Publishing, Inc., we have staff in both Chapel Hill, NC, and NYC.

This job is located in New York City, with a hybrid office/work from home schedule.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, industrious, highly organized, collegial, and a great reader and writer with the ability to multitask and prioritize, and to work independently.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Managing phones, calendars, meetings, expense accounts, mailings, and other basic administrative tasks
  • Reading and tracking submissions; writing reader reports
  • Managing and drafting fact sheets and other presentation materials
  • Completing awards submissions
  • Tracking contracts and payments and communications with authors and agents
  • Proofreading galley and jacket materials
  • Drafting descriptive copy, trafficking paperback and backlist materials, and other more creative tasks directly involved with our books

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Have a passion for books, literature, and contemporary culture and ideas
  • Have a college degree
  • Have strong writing and communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with authors, agents, and internal departments across HBG
  • Be a proactive, detail-oriented self-starter comfortable with multitasking and with organizational tools and databases
  • Have proficiency with Microsoft Office suite

The compensation range for this position is $45,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
