The Lutheran Home at Johnstown, a skilled nursing, personal care, and independent living community, is actively seeking candidates for a full time/exempt Director of Nursing. This is a supervisory position that plans, organizes, develops, implements, evaluates, and directs the overall operation of the Nursing Department to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.


The Lutheran Home at Johnstown is offering a $5,000 sign-on/retention bonus for a Director of Nursing. Occasional, or casual, positions do not qualify. Bonuses will be paid in increments over a specified period of time.


Responsibilities:

  • Develops methods for coordination of nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of the residents’ total regimen of care.
  • Perform administrative duties (i.e. completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc.,)
  • Maintains a reference library of written nursing material (i.e., PDR’s, federal and state regulations, etc.,) that will assist the nursing department in meeting the day-to-day needs of the resident.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains a continuous quality improvement program for the nursing department.
  • Assists the Administrator in developing, implementing and periodically updating the written procedures for the discharge planning program.
  • Participates in surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
  • Makes written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator, as necessary/required, concerning the operation of the nursing department.
  • Serves on, participates in, and attends various committees of the facility (i.e., quality assurance, ethics, etc.).
  • Evaluate and implement recommendations from committees as they may pertain to nursing services.
  • Provides the Administrator with information relative to the nursing needs of the resident and the nursing services department’s ability to meet those needs.
  • Greets newly admitted residents upon admission. Escorts to room as necessary.
  • Reviews nurses’ notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided and that they reflect the resident’s response to the care.
  • Makes rounds with physicians as necessary.
  • Encourages attending physicians to record and sign progress notes, physicians’ orders, etc., on a timely basis and in accordance with current regulations.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with consultant personnel and effectively follows up on recommendations.
  • Schedule daily rounds to observe residents and to determine if nursing needs are being met.
  • Monitors medication passes and treatment schedules to assure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled.
  • Provides direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Develops preliminary and comprehensive assessments of the nursing needs of each resident.
  • Ensures there is a written plan of care (preliminary and comprehensive) for each resident that identifies the problems/needs of the resident, indicates the care to be given, goals to be accomplished, and which professional service is responsible for each element of care.
  • Assists in the scheduling of care plans and assessments to be discussed at each committee meeting.
  • Ensures that all personnel involved in providing care to the resident are aware of the care plan and that they are used in administering daily care to the resident by reviewing nurses’ notes and physical observation.
  • Serves as “Acting Administrator” when administrator is away from building.
  • Develops and maintains a good rapport with all services involved with the care plan to ensure that a team effort is achieved in developing a comprehensive plan of care.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university; BSN preferred.
  • Current PA RN license.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a nursing management position, prior experience in a management or exempt role in a long-term care setting/community, and a thorough understanding of current nursing issues and practices and DOH regulations as they relate to long-term care.
