POSITION SUMMARY*
East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create an economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families and the communities.
East Side House’s Early Childhood programs provide Early Head Start and Head Start services in a safe, supportive, educational environment for children ages 18+ months to 5 years of age. Serving 231 children daily from five locations, the comprehensive program is designed to develop the cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills of children in a safe, supportive environment. Children and families receive a broad range of educational, nutritional, social and preventive health services. Our staff foster partnerships with families so that they can support school learning and achievement as well as advocate for their children and themselves. We expect that all staff will work collaboratively, and with the community, to promote school readiness while creating a safe, healthy and protective environment.
The primary function(s) and goals of the Director of Family Services is to support the departmental goals, outcomes and deliverables. The Director of Family Services will oversee the family Service Coordinators, ensure the ERESA requirements, enrollment and attendance are in compliance with contractual mandates. The Director of Family Services will manage timelines and submission of attendance and enrollment. The Director will ensure monthly parent workshops are facilitated and represent parent need and interest. The Director of Family Services will ensure databases are updated regularly to reflect enrollment within the program, he/she will ensure class lists are updated and accurate. The Director of Family Services will act as a liaison with ACS and DOE on enrollment related matters. The Director of Family Services will ensure quality record keeping, case note documentation, quality service provision to families and timely data entry, analysis and practice.

Essential Functions:
Duties include, but are not limited to the following key activities

  • Supervision of the Family Services staff and provide direction with administrative and practical aspects of their work (e.g. intake process, interviewing, family goal setting, tracking of attendance and provision of services).
  • Oversee and assist staff with appropriate referrals (e.g. individual, group, agency resources in the community).
  • Oversee and assist staff in planning and conducting meetings and other activities.
  • Oversee and assist staff in their role as resource persons to parent participation programs.
  • Oversee Family Services component through supervision and periodical evaluation of staff and support staff to ensure program enhancements, development, commonalities and uniqueness in all sites.
  • Assist the agency’s Deputy Director and Assistant Director, by representing the agency at outside professional meetings; in developing community relations and outreach strategies, e.g. Community Building Project, Community Planning Board, Community School District, and Collaborative efforts.
  • Support parents, program participants and community residents in the active involvement in agency community building efforts, as well as complete tasks necessary to move these efforts forward.
  • Stay abreast of resources, programs, initiatives, best practices, etc. that will add value to Head Start/Day Care programs and make recommendations to leadership.
  • Establish knowledge base on Head Start/Day Care and ESH’s procedures, and comprehension of Collective Bargaining Agreements, and apply all effectively through-out day to day operations
  • Demonstrate clear and effective oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrate strong, creative, strategic and analytical thinking skills.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners and community organizations.
  • Hold staff accountable for achieving benchmarks and results in child and family outcomes.
  • Analyzes child and family outcomes; leads data-driven decision making to increase student achievement, family outcomes and school readiness.
  • Perform additional program duties functions as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Social Work; Master’s in Social Work preferred
  • Two (2) years of Community Service or Social Services/Community Services Agency work

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Expected Hours of Work*
This is a full-time, exempt position. General work schedule for this position is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH’s needs. Possible work on weekends, holidays or after work hours for projects, special events, etc. to meet program operational goals.
