Position Summary Information

Summary of Position
The Director of Disabilities Resources provides administrative oversight and operational, programmatic, and fiscal direction for the Office of Disabilities Resources. The primary function of the department is to ensure that the programs, curricula, and facilities of the University are accessible to all students of the University Community. This is accomplished through department functions of academic accommodation, as necessary, support services, and University and external consultation within the context of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as amended (2008). The Director works in conjunction with other members of the Disabilities Resources team to provide appropriate accommodations and support services to students with disabilities as needed and required by law. The Director provides leadership, directs planning and assessment for the Office, develops appropriate policies and procedures, supervises professional and support staff, and collaborates with campus administrators, faculty, and staff members to provide appropriate access for persons with disabilities throughout the campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee daily operations of Disabilities Resources team/area.
  • Supervise professional and support staff members of the Disabilities Resources team.
  • Support diversity and inclusion efforts on campus through committee membership, outreach, and policy development.
  • Provide strategic planning for the area; develop action and assessment plans in accordance with the University’s current strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with Admissions and other key University offices in recruiting new students, providing information and orientation to prospective students and their family members.
  • Develop and implement department-specific policies and procedures.
  • Consult and collaborate with offices on campus that provide modifications for students with temporary issues, medical conditions, and disability-related needs.
  • Remain up to date with legal and technological developments related to accessibility for persons with disabilities, particularly in higher education settings.
  • Maintain familiarity with reviewing and interpreting disability-related documentation and related materials.
  • Provide consultation, information, resources, and training workshops to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Access and Accommodations
  • Lead and direct matters involving accessibility barriers with accessibility. Provide oversight for disability-related services. Establish department priorities, fiscal management, and department policies.
  • Develop educational and direct service activities. Obtain assessment data and ensure these measures are used to create meaningful changes (closing the loop).
  • Oversee the interactive process of self-identification and evaluation of requests for accommodations and services, including coordination of approved accommodations and services with appropriate University personnel to maintain compliance
with Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments.
  • Oversee eligibility determinations for accommodations based on review of
psychological or medical documentation/evidence.
  • Oversee coordination and direct implementation of accommodations and assess effectiveness, when appropriate.
Compliance and Regulatory Requirements
  • Maintain a working knowledge of changing federal and state regulations and policies
affecting persons with disabilities, including: FERPA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation
Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act, including ADA standards and regulations
and other disability-related civil rights law and regulations.
  • Maintain responsibility for technical consultation and expertise working closely with University personnel and Counsel (as needed) to identify and clarify legal mandates that support University departments, programs, policies and activities, to ensure equal access to students and other members of the University community.
  • Monitor and coordinate Disabilities Resources (DR) compliance activities that identify trends, potential areas of compliance, vulnerabilities, and risk.
  • Maintain a confidential secure database and filing system with medical, psychological,
and educational documentation related to accommodations and services provided by DR.
  • Lead and direct planning and training activities with academic departments,
administrative programs, and offices on Universal Design for Instruction principles.
Collaboration and Technical Consultation
  • Collaborate with faculty to identify academic educational barriers and the development of accessible learning opportunities, both in‐and‐outside of the classroom.
  • Provide direct support to faculty and instructional staff regarding accessibility and
principles of Universal Design for Instruction.
  • Serve on University committees to provide ongoing training and technical
consultation on matters of access involving the health, safety, welfare, and needs
of students.
  • Serve in a consultative role with faculty, staff and students throughout the University to
identify barriers that limit access to programs and services in the residential and ’’virtual’’
(electronic) campus.
Supervision and Administration
  • Provide direct oversight and leadership for Disabilities Resources, including all disability-related access, departmental initiatives, and budget
management.
  • Provide direct supervision and evaluation for the members of the DR staff.
  • Ensure all employees have access to tools and information related to career development
opportunities, and actively participate in employee growth and development.


Education Requirements
Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Rehabilitation
Counseling, Disability Services, Counseling Psychology, Educational Psychology, or other
related fields. Doctoral Degree strongly recommended.

Length of Experience
  • Seven to ten (7-10) years of progressive administrative leadership experience in
Disability/Accessibility Services.
  • Five years of experience implementing legally mandated accommodations and addressing the needs of students with disabilities in a higher education setting.
