Job Overview:

HUC-JIR seeks an experienced, mission-driven, passionate, self-starter as a New York City-based Director of Advancement. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Institutional Advancement and working in collaboration with colleagues across North America and Israel, the Director of Advancement will develop and maintain key donor and alumni relationships; create and implement fundraising and leadership development programs; and increase awareness of HUC-JIR among donors, prospects and the broader community.

Central to the Director of Advancement role will be the responsibility to identify new philanthropic investors, secure major gifts, provide meaningful touchpoints for engagement with HUC-JIR, and develop creative and effective programmatic activities together with fellow gift officers and HUC colleagues.

The Director of Advancement will work in concert with the Dean of the NY Campus, the National academic and executive leadership team, and colleagues on the Institutional Advancement team on campaign strategy, prioritization, and relationship building, and to enhance the community of HUC-JIR, and the local Board of Governor members, and Eastern Region Board of Advisors to build and expand the philanthropic community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and grow HUC-JIR's current donor base in the New York/Tri-state region, specifically identifying individuals with major and principal giving capacity.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of prospects to grow to about 100 individuals/families.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle, including identification, engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Initiate contacts to qualify new, potential leadership, and major gift donors.
  • Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for new and existing donors.
  • Solicit gifts of $10,000 and above in support of HUC-JIR's priorities.
  • Develop and maintain effective stewardship, especially of newer donors.
  • Regularly qualify new prospects to determine their affinity for HUC-JIR's mission and propensity to contribute at the major gift level.
  • Successfully complete 12-15 in-person meetings with HUC-JIR donors/prospects each month.
  • Partner with staff and volunteer leadership and local alumni and congregations to identify new donors, implement fundraising strategies and constituency-building programs, and coordinate HUC-JIR VIP visits to the region.
  • Write customized proposals and presentations for major individual donors.
  • Attend events related to Reform Judaism, Jewish professional leadership development, Israel, and other relevant subject matters to network with potential donors and partner organizations and to represent HUC-JIR's presence in the target communities.
  • Utilize the HUC-JIR database (Raiser's Edge) to maintain accurate records of all donor interactions, individuals' programmatic interests, trends in giving, and type of support to solicit.
  • Travel nationally for HUC-JIR professional staff institutes and other programs.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 7 to 10+ years of experience in a donor-centered development program with a track record of closing major and principal gifts.
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred; a master's degree is preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • A strategic and organized work style with excellent oral communication and writing skills.An ability to set priorities, manage projects and meet deadlines. A capacity to manage and thrive during organizational change.
  • A sophisticated and comfortable way of dealing with significant philanthropists.
  • Experience with six and seven-figure gifts, multi-year pledges, and planned giving strategies, are preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in utilizing CRM databases to manage prospect lists.
  • Attention to detail; high standard for quality and productivity.
  • Extensive knowledge of philanthropy and familiarity with Jewish philanthropists in the region.
  • Knowledge of the Reform Jewish community and passion for the mission of HUC-JIR.
  • Ability to work in a highly collegial manner within a complex, national and international organizational culture. Experience working with organizations in Israel is preferred.
  • Comfort working with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other video conferencing platforms.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel as needed.
  • Willingness to work evenings and occasional weekends to participate in events.
  • Travel throughout the Eastern region is required.
