The Direct Support Professional is the primary line of support to persons’ with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) who are provided services by the Department on Disability Services (DDS) and the Developmental Disability Administration (DDA). Using person centered thinking and planning, the DSP is responsible for supporting and advocating for the persons’ with ID/DD in either or both the home and community environments, following the principles of the 6 core values and in compliance with DDS Policies and Procedures as well as VCS internal Policies and Procedures.

The following job responsibilities are assigned to the DSP

1. Assist clients in maintaining safe and healthy lifestyles, and monitor for changes in their general health, appearance, behavior, and patterns of activities.

2. Ensure timely submission of incident report to immediate supervisor.

3. Make sure person personal appearance is presentable with daily grooming and adequate seasonal clothing.

4. Maintain line of communication with House Manager and all administrative staff.

5. Implement BSP, HMCP, ISP, HPP, IPP and maintain and complete documentation as it relates to each plan in accordance with DSP on-going training.

6. Communicate with all shifts of any changes or concerns.

7. Make sure all things are 18” from the floor and stored properly in residences.

8. Make sure all cleaning supplies are stored properly.

9. Perform all duties according to the roster for each shift.

10. Maintain cleanliness of company van.

11. Develop service recipient’s basic living skills (e.g., social, domestic, and hygiene) through instruction and encouragement.

12. Assist and document the development and implementation of IPP goals, etc. for persons served.

13. Develop and maintain a positive and effective relationship with persons, families, staff, administration, case management, and other service providers and assist in coordinating with any and all their needs.

14. Perform or assist person with personal hygiene as needed (e.g., bathing, brushing teeth, shaving, nail clipping, dressing, bodily functions, and appearance) and document any changes in signs and symptoms.

15. Perform or assist person in basic domestic duties as needed (e.g., cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping).

16. Maintain person’s schedule (e.g., doctor appointments, professional team appointments and job).

17. Coordinate person’s participation in leisure and recreational activities.

18. Maintain records and complete paperwork as required by VCS and DDS (e.g., timesheets, mileage, petty cash, medication logs, person’s progress, visitor logs, Incident Reports and goal data).

19. Adhere to person’s behavior and nutritional and dietary plans.

20. Maintain a safe environment for the person; prevent harm to person, self, and others. Report any safety concerns to management in a timely manner.

21. Transport person to and from work, scheduled appointments, and recreational activities in a safe and timely manner.

22. Manage persons and agency's funds in accordance with VCS policies and procedures.

23. Serve as a good role model to person.

24. Maintain current certification as required VCS, DDS, persons’ ISP (e.g., CPR, First Aid, MAT, blood borne pathogens, CPI, Physical etc.)

25. Maintain familiarity with current VCS and DDS policies and procedures as outlined by information on http://dds.dc.gov/ etc.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

Education:

  • High school or equivalent (Preferred)

Experience:

  • Caregiving: 1 year (Preferred)

Shift availability:

  • Day Shift (Preferred)
  • Night Shift (Preferred)
  • Overnight Shift (Preferred)
