Department Summary & Job Purpose:

Mount Holyoke College’s Library, Information, and Technology Services (LITS) Division empowers a diverse and inclusive learning community equipping every person to purposefully engage the world. We connect people with the information, expertise, spaces, and technologies that enhance their work and fuel scholarly endeavor. Mount Holyoke College is part of the Five Colleges, Inc. Consortium along with Amherst College, Hampshire College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The Archives and Special Collections (ASC) at Mount Holyoke College collects, preserves, and makes accessible the official records of the College; papers of individuals associated with Mount Holyoke including alum, faculty, and staff; and records of student life. ASC’s Rare Book collection reflects the curriculum of Mount Holyoke over time. It spans the history of print culture as well as contemporary fine press and artists books.

Reporting to the Head of Archives and Special Collections (ASC), this position offers the opportunity to join a department that is committed to developing user-centered and transformative approaches to archival work. As a member of the ASC department, this person will provide technical expertise to expand and care for the digital tools that enable students, faculty, staff, alums, and researchers to use our distinctive collections more widely. The work of this position will include collaborations with the Digital Library and Academic Technologies department and other departments at LITS, Mount Holyoke College, and the Five Colleges. Each member of the ASC department actively promotes the commitment of the College and LITS to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by developing and supporting diverse and inclusive collections.


Core Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates development of metadata to support the discovery and management of digital content, such as digital scholarship, digitized collections, born-digital archives, and research data.
  • Leads the implementation, management, and assessment of discovery and repository tools for digital collections.
  • Interact with Lyrasis, including negotiating and managing requirements for ArchivesSpace system updates, enhancements, or other changes.
  • Administer, manage, and maintain ArchivesSpace.
  • Supports integrations with digital library systems as needed.
  • Develop, document, and implement procedures for accessioning, arranging, describing, and providing access to digitized and born-digital materials.
  • Manage digitization projects including scanning, photography, and reformatting of AV materials for researchers and for preparing content for digital collections.
  • Identify, curate, and implement potential additions to the digital collections.
  • Collaborate with partners inside and outside of LITS on digital collections related to initiatives, evaluating goals, requirements, and scope to meet partner needs.
  • Translate ideas developed in collaboration with partners into actionable workflows and infrastructure in the library.
  • Monitor professional trends in assigned areas and make recommendations to ensure that services and resources are kept up to date with best practices.
  • Explores and proposes new technologies to meet research and instructional needs in ASC.
  • Advises on library policy issues raised by digital resources including but not limited to copyright policy, intellectual freedom issues, and fair use.
  • Serves as a resource for students, faculty, and staff about data stewardship.
  • Assists with reference and research services as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Evening and weekend work, as necessary.


Qualifications: 1. MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program, or education and experience sufficiently relevant to substitute for the ALA-accredited degree.
2. Three years or more of related experience in an academic library, archives, museum, and/or other cultural heritage collections.
3. Knowledge and management of digital collections and services.
4. Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in daily work and the workplace culture.
5. Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, organize, and complete multiple projects.
6. Flexibility to learn new and relevant technologies on an ongoing basis.
7. Demonstrated knowledge of descriptive and metadata standards (EAD, DACS, Dublin Core, etc.). Knowledge of current metadata standards, such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, and other emerging data standards.
8. Experience working with content management systems (ContentDM, Omeka, Islandora, ArchivesSpace, etc.).
9. Experience in working with digital conversion, file transfer, and file management, metadata for digital objects, coding in web contexts (including HTML5, CSS, JavaScript), and scripting at the operating system level.
10. Knowledge of current and developing technologies, standards, and best practices in digital collection management, policy, and preservation.

Preferred Qualifications: 1. Knowledge and experience working with primary source materials for women’s history and higher education in the United States.
2. Evidence of an enthusiastic service orientation, exhibits excellent and creative interpersonal communication, organizational and problem-solving skills, and strong oral and written communication skills.
3. Must be flexible and capable of working successfully individually and in teams in an evolving library environment.
4. Enthusiastic, people-oriented individual with creativity and a passion for supporting a collaborative work environment.
5. Ability to maintain a professional and tactful approach in all interactions, ensuring confidentiality and an individual’s right to privacy regarding appropriate information.

Physical Demands: Ability to lift boxes up to 40 lbs on a regular basis and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and extensive reading.

Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.

Sufficient clarity of speech required includes those which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.

Working Conditions: Employee operates office equipment and computers to perform essential duties and responsibilities.

The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
