Summary of Job Duties:
The Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas seeks a dynamic, academic leader to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Finance and to hold the Alice L. Walton Endowed Chair in Finance beginning Summer 2023. The department seeks a collegial scholar who possesses a strong research record in finance, a demonstrated record of excellent teaching, a desire to mentor junior faculty, and a commitment to working with the entire faculty to continue increasing the impact of the Department.

The University of Arkansas is an R1 research university with an enrollment of 30,000 students, and the Walton College is regularly ranked as one of the United States’ top business schools. In 2022, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Walton College as the 24th best public undergraduate business program, and its MBA program was recently ranked by The Wall Street Journal as the 11th best ROI out of 600 programs. The Walton College combines excellent academic programs with a wide range of experiential learning to help its more than 8,000 students connect scholarship with real business practice. It offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in International Business. The graduate programs include a doctoral program, which includes eight specializations, MBA and Executive MBA programs, and several specialized master programs, including the Master of Science in Finance. The college encourages research and creation of the latest business knowledge.

The Department of Finance is one of the largest departments on campus and has 12 tenured/tenure-track faculty, four teaching faculty, three full-time instructors, and several doctoral students. Scholarly activity produced by the faculty has been published in outlets such as the Journal of Finance, Journal of Finance and Economics, and Review of Financial Studies.

The Chair of the Department of Finance will be a dynamic, academic leader that will also hold the Alice L. Walton Endowed Chair in Finance. The Chair will be a collegial scholar who possesses a strong research record in finance, a demonstrated record of excellent teaching, a desire to mentor junior faculty, and a commitment to working with the entire faculty to continue increasing the impact of the Department.

The successful candidate will have a strong ethical character and an inclusive and transparent leadership style to engage faculty, staff, industry, and external stakeholders. The candidate will also enhance the productivity and reputation of the department along multiple dimensions including continued development of the master’s and doctoral programs, and promotion of excellence in research and teaching.

The administrative component of the role will include the maintenance of a conducive research environment and teaching culture, in addition to stewarding the departmental resources. The Department Chair is also responsible for leading the faculty in managing curriculum related to finance across the undergraduate and graduate programs. The Chair serves on the College’s Executive Committee and supports the Dean and Associate Deans in evaluating and supporting college initiatives. The position is 50% administrative, and the teaching load is typically one course per year.

The Alice L. Walton Endowed Chair in Finance is named for one of the world’s leading philanthropists and founder of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the endowed chair supports the Chair’s research program. The Alice Walton Chair, closely aligned with the Department Chair expectations, are to advance the stature of the Finance Department, seek research funding and publish scholarly research, mentor junior faculty, contribute to the doctoral program, and promote a positive working relationship with the community.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate Professor rank or higher with tenure at an AACSB-accredited business school
  • Ph.D. in Finance or a closely related field
  • Active research program or history of a strong research record for current administrators
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, service, and research
