Position Summary

The University of New Mexico is seeking faculty at the Open Rank level in the Clinician Educator track to join the Department of Dental Medicine, Division of Dental Services. The Division of Dental Services is an interdepartmental program organized to build collaboration in the areas of education, research and service.

The Department of Dental Medicine at the University of New Mexico School Of Medicine in Albuquerque is looking for a full-time General Dentist specializing in Special Needs to provide and oversee direct dental diagnosis, treatment, procedures, and care for patients with Special Needs in a public health setting. The position requires a general dentist with a demonstrated strong clinical background in management and care for Special Needs adult patients. The ideal candidate should have completed a postgraduate general dentistry training (AEGD/GPR) from a CODA accredited program advanced training and experience in Special Needs Dentistry. Preference will be given to applicants with prior teaching experience, and a work history that includes Special Needs patient care in the areas highlighted in this position. The Special Needs dentist should have current relative experience with general dentistry including comfort with routine and uncomplicated surgical extractions. In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience working with and supervising dental residents. Certification by either the American Board of Oral Medicine or American Board of Special Care Dentistry and demonstrated excellence in treating patients with specialized healthcare needs (including developmental and physical disability and medical complexity) are preferred. This is a clinician educator track open rank position. The position will carry an appointment in the Department of Dental Medicine. The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary team of faculty providing the delivery of education, surgical services, clinical care, and research.

Responsibilities:

  • Intramural practice (Adults and Children)
  • Perform clinical procedures with the patient in mind in order to respect the patient’s time and hesitations in receiving dental treatment. Working in dental clinic and/or OR setting
  • Call at UNM Hospital (may be after-hours. We are currently under negotiations to have the call end at 6 PM)
  • Resident didactic and clinical training as part of the faculty
  • Working with and supervising dental residents
  • Coordinating resident professional education
  • Fostering inter-professional practice collaborations
  • Providing direct clinical care with dedicated experience with patients with special needs in a clinical setting
  • Modeling and upholding the educational foundation for professional behavior
  • Maintaining immaculate documentation of all procedures and practices in an electronic chart
  • Pursuit of self-improvement by continuously seeking training on how to support special needs patients

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • General Dentist with ability to provide dental care for patients with Special Needs
  • Doctorate degree in Dental Surgery or Dental Medicine
  • At least 1 year of directly related experience completing dental treatments to patients with Special Needs
  • Licensure from New Mexico Board of Dental Health Care

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with dental residents
  • Experience in the practice of the full scope general dentistry and family practice for greater than 5 years
  • Experience in special needs practice and maintaining training on how to support special needs patients
  • Demonstrated Skills for extractions for patients with Special Needs
  • Hospital dentistry
  • Working with a dental anesthesiologist in a dental clinic setting
  • Any general dentistry residency program completion
  • Certification by either the American Board of Oral Medicine or American Board of Special Care Dentistry
