SUMMARY
Dental Assistants in the Merit System assist dentists or dental hygienists chair-side during dental procedures. This could include performing a variety of tasks such as mixing materials, sterilizing instruments and equipment, and preparing patients for dental treatment in health department dental clinics, trailers or related mobile dental programs. Individuals in this position are also required to handle front desk duties that include scheduling appointments, creating and updating dental records, completing billing tasks, and ordering supplies and materials. Work is performed within well defined protocols, policies and procedures under the immediate supervision of a Senior Dental Hygienist or Dentist. Work is reviewed through observation, accuracy and annual performance review.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Schedules appointments and completes patient registration by entering patient’s information into the computer system in order to create or update dental records.
  • Performs front office procedures such as billing for dental services, placing payment requisitions, collecting payments from patients, and placing orders for dental supplies.
  • Performs patient interviews and assessments, including documentation of dental/oral health history and current oral health status.
  • Cleans outpatient rooms, outreach clinics, or other patient areas as well as cleaning and sanitizing dental tools and equipment used in dental procedures.
  • Sets up and prepares outpatient rooms, outreach clinics or other patient areas, and performs inventory checks and stocking supplies.
  • Assists Dentist with procedures or treatments (e.g., four-handed Dentistry).
  • Maintains and provides professional expertise through continued education, observation and instruction of students, and sharing knowledge and services offered with the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
OPTION A:
  • Possession of a certificate from a CODA accredited dental assisting program.
  • Experience utilizing an electronic dental records software program (Dentrix, Eagle Soft, etc.) for the purposes of charting and/or registration of new patients (i.e., intake, insurance verification, payments, etc.).
  • Experience exposing and developing digital radiographs (X-rays).
OPTION B:
  • Completion of at least 10 months of a dental assisting program.
  • Experience utilizing an electronic dental records software program (Dentrix, Eagle Soft, etc.) for the purposes of charting and/or registration of new patients (i.e., intake, insurance verification, payments, etc.).
  • Experience exposing and developing digital radiographs (X-rays).
OPTION C:
  • Experience as a dental assistant or dental hygienist where you have performed the following types of work or activities: assisting a dentist with variety of procedures (operative, prosthetic, extractions, endodontic, pedodontic, orthodontic, and/or periodontic), familiar with chair set up materials, armamentarium set up for a variety of procedures, infection control procedures, utilization of autoclave sterilization equipment, etc.
  • Experience utilizing an electronic dental records software program (Dentrix, Eagle Soft, etc.) for the purposes of charting and/or registration of new patients (i.e., intake, insurance verification, payments, etc.).
  • Experience exposing and developing digital radiographs (X-rays).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • One year or more experience assisting with pediatric dentistry procedures.
  • One year or more experience assisting with oral surgery procedures.
  • One year or more experience assisting with endodontic procedures.
  • Experience verifying insurance and submitting dental claims.
  • Front desk experience (answering calls, registering patients, cash handling, etc.).

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:
  • Knowledge of the names of the teeth and various surfaces of the tooth.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate set-up of different types of medical equipment based on procedure or examination being performed.
  • Knowledge of specialized sterilization and sanitization techniques and practices used in hospitals and medical institutions to prevent contamination and the spread of disease.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting.
  • Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
  • Work involves use of dental tools and equipment necessary for the care and/or diagnosis of dental patients.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing.
