NATURE OF WORK

With supervision by the principals, the Dean of Students and Family Outreach provides administrative assistance in areas assigned by the Principal, including student supervision, specifically in attendance, discipline, guidance, and family/community outreach. The Dean of Students and Family Outreach is a main school contact for parents and guardians and should be passionate about supporting our students, be adaptable to changes, and cultivate productive relationships with all members of the school community, including faculty, students, and families.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists school staff, students, and parents in resolving attendance, behavioral and/or academic problems making home visits as necessary, providing lay counseling, providing feedback to school staff, making appropriate referrals, and monitoring progress.
  • Contact families about attendance and truancy on a daily basis.
  • Assists families in the solution of problems that interfere with student success in school and community; directing families to appropriate agencies, medical attention, or other assistance.
  • Acts as liaison to community agencies.
  • Compiles and investigates information related to student attendance, truancy, and/or behavior problems and prepares necessary reports for submission to appropriate parties.
  • Responsible for mitigating student attendance problems.
  • Receives referrals and responds to requests for resource information and parent support.
  • Explains services available to students and families within the district and the community.
  • Assists with developing and implementing programs for parent and family involvement that support improving attendance and academic achievement for targeted students (Title I).
  • Assist teachers, students, and parents in the effective creation and implementation of individual behavior/attendance/support plans (in conjunction with the Social Worker/Guidance Counselor/MTSS Behavioral Facilitator).
  • Reinforce the effective use of a school-wide behavior plan.
  • Work closely with school administration to develop a positive, structured, achievement-oriented, and creative school culture.
  • Assists the principal in maintaining standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere and effective participation in all activities.
  • Serve as a point person for discipline issues; in this role, the dean is the primary contact person for all acute discipline issues.
  • Administers student disciplinary actions in strict conformance with established district policy.
  • Attends and provides supervision at school activities occurring during late afternoon and evening hours.
  • Coordinates the planning, development, and revision of student manuals, orientation materials, and forms.
  • Meets and confers with parents and school personnel in developing alternative solutions to student attendance and discipline problems and concerns.
  • Keep detailed, accurate records of meetings and conversations with staff, students, and families.
  • Establish and maintain efficient record keeping/filing systems that ensure confidentiality.
  • Serves, as requested on district committees.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Academics and Accountability.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.


Mathematical Skills:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form


Computer Skills:
Familiarity with basic computer operation and software. Ability to learn various computer operations required for management of student information and integration of technology in classroom instruction.


Other:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on the division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs. such as to lift files, paper, school supplies, books, etc.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee continuously interacts with the public and staff.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years of classroom experience or equivalent professional experience.
  • A tremendous ability to be flexible and modify plans in order to best serve students
  • Experience managing, leading, or directing individuals with a diverse background.

EVALUATION

Performance in this position will be evaluated regularly by the supervisor in accordance with Board Policy.
