Position Summary

Identify, document, collect and preserve physical evidence in the field; ensure the preservation of all items taken into evidence; testify in court regarding the chain of custody and integrity of evidence.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

CRIME SCENE SPECIALIST II, M12
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Associate's degree in criminal justice, social science, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physical science or a related field, plus three years (3) years of public safety, crime scene investigation or crime scene evidence collection experience.

Upon successful completion of one (1) year of service as a Crime Scene Specialist II M12, the employee will be moved to a Crime Scene Specialist III M13.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must pass Drug Test, Criminal Records check and Background check.
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Must successfully complete the Crime Scene Specialist (CSS) Training program and the CSS OJT program.
Must successfully pass a physical agility test.
One (1) year probationary period is required for this position.

CRIME SCENE SPECIALIST III, M13
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
Exception: One (1) year of crime scene investigation or crime scene evidence collection experience is not interchangeable.

Associate's degree in criminal justice, social science, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physical science or a related field, plus four (4) years of crime scene investigation or crime scene evidence collection experience.

  • Basic photographic techniques
  • Rules and procedures of providing expert testimony in court
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping
  • Office procedures, methods and equipment including computers
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Operate basic power tools, hand tools and equipment
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
  • Perform forensic evidence collection, identification, and applicable field analysis functions
  • Investigate and process crime scenes in a professional, efficient and thorough manner
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and policies and procedures governing the processing and maintenance of evidence and property
  • Ensure accuracy of work performed
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Prepare complex technical written and verbal reports
  • Communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
