JOB TITLE: CORRECTIONS OFFICER

REPORTS TO: CORRECTIONS SUPERVISOR/SERGEANT

Corrections Officers are covered under the Fraternal Order of Police/OLC and are entitled to all benefits offered in the respective Collective Bargaining Agreement. For 2021, entry level pay is $19.29, which is increased to $21.43 upon successful completion of State certification.

Major responsibilities require consistent attention and commitment to the goals and objectives of the Stark County Sheriff’s Office. All assigned duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient and safe manner as taught in the Basic Academy and reinforced through policy, procedure, directives and in-service training and retraining. The jobholder must accept the responsibility to support and promote the mission of the Stark County Sheriff’s Office and comply with all policy, procedure and directives. Personal conduct and behavior, both on duty as well as off duty, must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public’s trust or confidence in the Stark County Sheriffs’ Office or its employees. This position requires a high level of problem-solving ability, self-initiative and the ability and willingness to work a majority of time without direct supervision. The jobholder must be capable and willing to make decisions that are consistently in line with the goals and objectives as set forth by the Stark County Sheriff.

Major duties involve caring for and maintaining the security and well-being of prisoners. This includes supervising inmates, conducting safety and security inspections, providing access to health care, conducting housing, feeding, bedding and well-being activities and maintaining accurate records involving all phases of inmate activity.

Working conditions are primarily indoors. Some tasks involve lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying moderately heavy loads. Jobholders must maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness that enables them to handle contacts with dangerous and potentially dangerous persons, often requiring physical force and, on occasion, without assistance. Jobholders must be able to physically subdue and restrain potentially violent persons. Jobholders will have occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other contagious pathogens.

Qualifications include a minimum educational attainment of a high school diploma or GED; must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire; must have a valid Ohio Drivers’ License; must have the physical and mental state of fitness to adequately perform the essential job functions; must have the ability to pass the pre-employment screening; must complete the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy Corrections Officer school and pass the final State examination. Jobholders must complete a 365 day probationary period that begins with the date of employment.

Miscellaneous:

Must be able to sustain attendance and be available to work as needed. Job is usually 8-12 hours per day, 5 days per week. Week-end and holiday work is necessary.

Overtime is required and at times it is necessary to work 12 hours shifts for several consecutive days.

Must be available for all shifts.
