The UVU Writing Center is seeking a coordinator to direct the Writing Fellows Program (a course-connected peer tutoring program for writing) and join the administrative team of the Writing Center and Graduate Writing Center.

Working under the direction of the Writing Center Director and as a member of the Writing Center’s administrative team, the Writing Fellows coordinator assists with the leadership and management of the Writing Center, including strategic planning, assessment, collaboration and communication with stakeholders, program and resources development, and education and supervision of the Writing Center staff. The Writing Fellows coordinator leads and directs the Writing Fellows program to provide course-connected tutoring to students writing in the disciplines and faculty teaching disciplinary writing. As the primary administrator over Writing Fellows, the coordinator develops the program and program resources; helps hire and train 15+ fellows; assesses the program and its participants; provides outreach and develops partnership with faculty working with the program; and provides reporting and resource management for Writing Fellows. The Writing Fellows coordinator also assists with mentoring assistant coordinators and helping Writing Center programs maintain academic and university alignment. They attend meetings, complete projects, provide committee service as assigned, and perform other duties as determined in consultation with the director.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Develop and Maintain Writing Fellows Programming and Services: Communicate and collaborate with the Writing Center director, assistant coordinator over Writing Fellows, and campus stakeholders to provide effective, data-driven learner-centered writing support to students in courses partnering with Writing Fellows. Work with Writing Fellows staff and stakeholders to develop, refine, and maintain in-person and online Writing Fellows programming and resources, including tutoring, workshops, handouts, videos, and learning modules. Assist with developing and maintaining Writing Center services.
  • Strategic Direction, Alignment, and Assessment: Provide strategic direction and university and academic alignment for Writing Fellows as part of the Writing Center. Remain current in writing center studies and the direction of the university, conduct Writing Fellows programmatic assessment, and work with the director to report assessment to administrators and campus stakeholders.
  • Staff Education, Mentoring, and Supervision: Assist with recruiting, hiring, educating, and mentoring of Writing Center administrative, student, and non-student staff (50+ employees), including onboarding new tutors and fellows. Oversee tutor education for Writing Fellows in conjunction with CRLA-certified Writing Center tutor education. Manage tutor education resources in Canvas. Assist with mentoring assistant coordinators and teaching tutor education. Observe and evaluate staff and assess staff education.
  • Resource Management: As related to the Writing Fellows program, ensure appropriate management, allocation, and accountability of resources according to university policy and procedure. Request, secure, and maintain resources for Writing Fellows, including budget, space, and staff. Propose, maintain, track, and analyze budgets, staffing, and space use for Writing Fellows with the larger Writing Center program.
  • Outreach and Communication: Assist with and work with the director to approve outreach and communication campaigns to promote and educate stakeholders about Writing Fellows partnerships and resources, including social media posts, presentations, and website information. Assist with Writing Center outreach and collaborate with other tutoring programs and other student support services to connect learners to campus resources and events.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in a directly related field of study plus three years of writing center administration experience totaling seven years OR a master’s degree in a directly related field of study and one year of writing center administration experience totaling seven years.

Preferred

Graduation from an accredited institution with a master’s degree in rhetoric and composition, education, linguistics, writing studies, communications plus two years writing center/writing fellow/writing program administration experience.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and extensive experience in tutoring and modeling effective tutoring or knowledge of learning theories and instructional design in an academic setting.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with using multimodal forms of instruction and delivery.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Writing Fellows programs and/or Supplemental Instruction, including experience with teaching or supporting Writing in the Disciplines (WID)/Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC).
  • Knowledge and experience with budget managements and tracking.
  • Skills in effective interpersonal communication and collaboration to work with stakeholders across the university and interact with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Skills in use of computers and computer applications.
  • Skills in tracking and managing statistics and information needed for decision-making and program improvement.
  • Skills and ability to foster professional and working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Ability to identify program needs and utilize available resources.
  • Ability to be self-directed and complete tasks without supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and implement a variety of support systems, programs, and initiatives related to student writing success.
  • Must possess a high degree of professionalism, initiative, creativity, tact, and confidentiality.
