• 
  Assemble, install, maintain, and pressure test all pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, drainage, sprinkler, and gas systems according to specifications and plumbing codes.
• Determine sources of plumbing malfunctions and complete repairs as indicated or according to work orders.
• Install underground storm, sanitary and water piping systems and extend piping to connect fixtures and plumbing to these systems.
• Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances such as dishwashers and water heaters, and fixtures such as sinks and toilets, using hand and power tools.
• Study building plans and inspect structures to assess material and equipment needs, to establish the sequence of pipe installations, and to plan installation around obstructions such as electrical wiring.
• Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates
• Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
• Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean
• Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
• Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc
• Locating leaks, tears, blockages, corrosion, and weather damage in water and HVAC features.
• Informing clients of all estimated costs before commencing work.

• Coordination – journeyman plumbers must have the dexterity and eye-hand coordination to handle and install small washers, nuts, O-rings, and gaskets.
• Blueprint reading – when involved in new home or building installations, journeyman plumbers must be able to read drawings, schematics, and blueprints to ensure proper installation of new lines and pipes.
• Troubleshooting – understanding how to check for leaks and determine what needs to be repaired or replaced to keep plumbing systems operational is a must for journeyman plumbers.
• Organizational skills – keeping tools and work areas clean and orderly and maintaining a proper supply of plumbing parts is a desirable quality many employers seek in journeyman plumbers.
• Communication skills – from verbally communicating with customers, vendors, and master plumbers to writing up estimates and work orders, communication is of the utmost importance for journeyman plumbers.
• Customer service – speaking with customers about pricing and repair details and making proper repairs and replacements to keep customers satisfied is a major part of being a journeyman plumber.
