ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Community Development Department (CDD) is the planning agency for the City of Cambridge. Encompassing the Community Planning, Economic Opportunity and Development, Environmental & Transportation Planning, Housing, and Zoning & Development divisions, CDD’s mission is to foster a livable, sustainable, just, and equitable community. CDD engages and collaborates with community partners, other government agencies, businesses, and residents to make Cambridge a desirable place to live, work, learn, play, and innovate. This position will report tothe Deputy Director/Chief of Administration.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Communications Manager will work on department-wide communications, media-related functions, and enhance CDD’s visibility through various communication channels. A successful candidate will be highly collaborative, self-motivated, and well-organized with excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work strategically and tactically. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee implementation of and updates to CDD’s communications strategy, with input from CDD leadership; build upon document templates, departmental brand guidelines, and style guides to ensure consistency in CDD’s messaging.
  • Collaborate with department staff to plan and execute initiatives that promote CDD’s programs.
  • Develop communication toolkits to assist department staff prepare materials in plain language for use in web, social and printed messaging.
  • Coordinate internal and external communications for CDD and its divisions; collaborate with City’s Director of Communications, citywide communications teams, City departments, and other organizations as needed.
  • Partner in the management of CDD’s website content; write original content for department homepage and other pages, approve web edits from staff, and publish content. Serve as departmental liaison for website upgrades.
  • Collaborate with department staff on developing content and managing implementation of digital media strategy, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and email marketing software.
  • Coordinate and foster media relationships to promote programs, public events, and initiatives to the community; prepare media releases and advisories.
  • Provide oversight to graphic design and/or website interns.
  • Design, draft and edit department publications as needed; develop talking points for department leadership.
  • Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English or a related field; plus 4 years of communications experience; an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for 2 years of work experience.
  • Experience working with design templates for flyers, posters, and other materials that align with branding guidelines.
  • Experience implementing communications campaigns and developing web content.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interpersonal skills; ability to relate to diverse audiences and convey ideas in plain language
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to manage and prioritize workloads, multi-task, and meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient use of social media for professional communications (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram)
  • Ability to work independently on projects and also work collaboratively with peers

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of communications experience, including exposure to one or more of CDD’s programs areas (i.e., community planning, housing, economic development, climate & energy, transportation planning, and zoning & development)
  • Experience with website content management systems, including updates and basic HTML coding
  • Knowledge of and ability to use Adobe Creative Cloud software, including InDesign, and other technology
  • Experience using data to track and measure communication efforts; k nowledge of online communication strategies and UX best practices is a plus
  • Familiarity with the Cambridge community preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to answer phones, maintain multiple files and able to lift a minimum of at least 10 pounds. Ability to travel throughout the City of Cambridge to various meetings, etc. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Standard office environment. Fluorescent lighting and air conditioning. Moderate noise level. This position may be eligible for hybrid work under the City’s Telework Policy, depending on operational needs.
