Communications Director Job at Corporate Accountability

Corporate Accountability Boston, MA 02108

The take-away

Ready to take on some of the most powerful forces in our society? We’re looking for a Communications Director to join a fierce, smart team challenging global corporations, holding them accountable, and creating a world where all people can thrive.

Why you’ll love coming to work every day

You’ll help change the world by being part of fearless and winning campaigns.
You’ll be joining an organization that’s not satisfied with the world as it is—and has a vision for how it should be. When your quest is ending corporate abuse, you can’t be afraid to name names and demand what the world needs. For more than 40 years, we’ve been exposing and challenging the abuses of the likes of Nestlé, Exxon Mobil, Philip Morris International, McDonald’s, and more. We don’t back down, and we run campaigns until we win.

You’ll work with awesome people.
Join a team of passionate, kind, determined, optimistic, and solutions-oriented folks. We work hard, celebrate victories large and small, and always have each other’s backs.

You’ll be trusted and relied upon to operate at a high level of responsibility.
You’ll thrive here if you’re ready to step into a management role. We pay lots of attention to leadership development, and we provide support and training to help you be the best you can be and continue to grow new skills, as we believe everyone has more to learn.

You’ll be part of an organization committed to advancing racial equity and transforming systems of oppression.
We are deeply committed to prioritizing the leadership of people who bear the brunt of corporate abuse: Black and Indigenous people and other people of color, women, low-income people, people in the Global South, and LGBTQ+ folks around the world. Our unique culture has been fostered by a long history of women at the helm. We are actively focusing on the leadership of our staff of color, knowing we are stronger when the organization reflects the vision of the world we’re building together.

What you’ll do

For more than four decades, Corporate Accountability has moved millions of people to challenge corporate power through hard-hitting campaigns that win victories for health, human rights, democracy, and the planet. Our communications are central to the overall success of both our campaigns and the people-powered fundraising that fuels them. Your job will be to lead the organization's communications strategy and manage the communications unit so that we’re creating the most powerful and effective communications possible. Your success in this role will mobilize people around the world to action, and you will be essential in helping shift the public climate on some of today’s most pressing issues.

As the Communications Director, and a leader within the organization, you’ll hold the big picture of our plans and goals while shaping strong communications and managing your team toward its greatest impact. Our communications are strategic, intentional, and bold—and with your strong leadership, facilitation, and project management skills, the sky’s the limit. You’ll take a creative, multimedia approach that will bring our communications to the next level, moving people to action while exposing the life-threatening abuses of transnational corporations.

To do so, you’ll partner with and build a team of passionate, creative, and strategic communicators, ranging from our U.S-based digital and media teams to our campaigners and contractors in Latin America, Africa, and beyond. The results of your collective work—from the halls of the U.N. to the front page of big-name news outlets to millions of people’s social media feeds—will move us toward a world free of corporate abuse, where all people can thrive.

Ready? Here we go!

Who you are

  • The rampant abuses of corporations and the outrageous amount of power they have make you mad as hell—and you want to do something about it.

  • You have a commitment to advancing racial equity and ending systems of oppression, and are ready to do this in your day-to-day work. You understand that campaigning for justice must include working to dismantle white supremacy, institutional racism, legacies of colonialism, and anti-Blackness.

  • You are a great staff and team manager. You have experience managing a team with an eye toward equity. You bring out the best in your team, managing staff toward goals, and encouraging people to lead from their positions. You know how to facilitate effective meetings toward clear, creative outcomes. And you're not afraid to make hard decisions when you need to.

  • You have a deep understanding of the power of language and communications to move people and create change. You are a top-notch writer and skilled editor in English, and you are experienced in framing and messaging best practices across all mediums to achieve campaign goals. Especially important: You can produce—and work with your team to produce—effective messaging across mediums and platforms that advances our campaigns and raises funds.

  • You are a systems thinker and planner: You are able to envision, create, and communicate clarity out of complexity, and you can manage complex projects on both tight deadlines and extended deadlines. You can pull this all off because you are highly organized in your thinking and your systems. You understand that planning is essential to success and have experience creating and implementing both short- and long-term plans.

  • Ideally, you have expertise in one or more of these areas: traditional media/press relations, publications, digital strategy, graphic design, branding, website and email development and coding and advocacy CRMs, and/or press/media relationship management tools.

  • You have at least 8 - 12 years of experience in doing communications work, ideally.

  • Bonus: you have the ability to speak a language other than English, ideally Spanish.

What you’ll be responsible for in the day-to-day

  • Lead and bottom-line the development of the organization’s strategic communications plans and tools, which are critical to our campaigning and fundraising success, as well as oversee the communications budget.

  • Manage staff, including the associate director of communications, digital director, and director of press relations, in tight coordination toward the organization’s communications, campaign, and fundraising priorities.

  • Ensure communications are impeccably produced in the organizational voice and style, adroitly edited, error-free, appropriate for the target audience, and compellingly designed.

  • Oversee strong coordination between the communications, development, and campaigns teams—grounded in relationship-building between teams—in order to inform and produce effective communications that leverage and are integrated across strategic platforms, mediums, and styles.

  • Partner with the director of media and press relations and our campaigners to secure hard-hitting media coverage that exposes corporate abuse and advances impact across our campaigns.

  • Ensure integration of organizational communications across digital platforms and manage the organization’s editorial calendar.

  • Support team members in the U.S., Latin America, Africa, and elsewhere in developing and deploying regionally and culturally appropriate communications that advance regional campaign priorities.

  • Lead the organization in assessing, vetting, and employing innovative and effective communications strategies—from storytelling approaches to using video to smart social media tactics.

  • Draft content for a variety of audiences, in line with our organizational style guide, that is inclusive; advances racial, economic, and gender equity; and educates and inspires people around the world to take action.

  • Travel 2 - 4 times each year to represent Corporate Accountability at events such as international treaty meetings or national campaigns events. Our current approach to travel is staff-led, meaning we will continue to center the health and safety of our staff in these decisions.

  • Actively participate in organization-wide planning, fundraising, racial equity work, recruitment, and campaign activities.

Salary and benefits:

  • Salary range: $85,000-$90,000 commensurate with experience.

  • Hours: Corporate Accountability’s full-time staff generally work 32 hours per week, with periods of more intensive work that correspond with the ebb and flow nature of campaigns or projects throughout the year. Our core hours are 10 am - 4 pm Eeastern Standard Time on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with flexibility to determine your remaining hours of the week in coordination with your supervisor and team. Given the nature of communications, rapid response moments, and working with media at an international organization, there will be instances where you would need to be available outside of standard business hours.

  • Our comprehensive benefit package includes: health insurance (with 90% of the premium for all tiers covered by the organization) and dental coverage (with 100% of the individual premium covered by the organization and the option to add dependents at an additional cost); FSA for transit, health care, and dependent care; childcare reimbursement options, voluntary life insurance and 401(k) with employer match.

  • Generous time off policies including one month of personal vacation time, one week of an office closure for collective rest, holidays, and unlimited wellness days to prioritize health.

  • Both internal and external training and leadership development opportunities.

  • Energetic, collaborative, and social campaign environment.
