Non-exempt; part-time; 18 hours per week; set hours (on-site) during regular operating hours (8am-5pm) with some evening and weekend hours; no benefits with exception of Employee Sick and Safe Leave accrual; subject to system-wide reassignment

This position is responsible for ensuring accurate and up-to-date information is available to Spanish-speaking customers via the library’s social media, email newsletters, website, and intranet. As part of FCPL’s Communications Team, the Communications Assistant (Bilingual Spanish) assists the Social Media Work Group and Contact Us Team, supports FCPL’s programming and community outreach, and collaborates with library departments, branches, and staff to tell FCPL’s story and promote our resources within the Spanish-speaking community of Frederick County. Supervision is received from the Communications Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with facilitation of outreach efforts for the Spanish-speaking community
  • Work with Communications Manager and library staff to identify, create, coordinate, and maintain Spanish content for social media, fcpl.org, email newsletters, Bookmarks – a quarterly magazine, and staff intranet
  • Manage and monitor FCPL’s Spanish language social media accounts; work with Social Media Workgroup to curate bilingual content for cross-platform promotions
  • Provide strong and effective customer service, responding to customer questions, complaints, and suggestions
  • Participate in outreach events and programs to promote library services
  • Translate graphics, text, and audio into Spanish
  • Proof and copyedit print and digital material
  • Assist Spanish-speaking customers of all ages with general virtual library questions
  • Participate in department and system-wide work teams
  • Ensure adherence to the library’s style guide and maintain brand identity across platforms and content
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current library, social media, and web-related trends, issues, and technology
  • Attend workshops, meetings and learning opportunities
  • Perform other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate’s degree from a recognized college
  • Note: Additional years of work experience may reduce the education requirement.
  • Secondary Spanish language skills with the ability to speak and write Spanish fluently, and to translate from Spanish to English, and from English to Spanish
  • Minimum 2 years of customer service work experience working directly with the public in retail, education, community or public relations, or any high-traffic customer service setting
  • Minimum 1 year work experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Strong and effective spoken and written English and Spanish communication skills
  • Strong writing skills to support a range of content, including website copy, social media, email communications, and reports
  • Strong copy-editing skills in AP editorial style
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with customers, co-workers and the general public
  • Strong internal and external customer service ability including ability to exhibit patience, tact and courtesy working collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Ability to demonstrate creativity, flexibility, positive attitude and good judgment
  • Ability to act as a representative of Frederick County Public Libraries to the public
  • Strong writing skills to support a range of content, including website copy, social media, email communications, and reports
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines simultaneously
  • Ability to effectively organize work, determine priorities, make decisions and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to complete assigned duties with minimal supervision

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:

  • 6 months work experience in a public library
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • While working in this position, the employee is required to frequently sit and walk; occasionally lift up to 20 pounds and drive; rarely push and pull up to 40 pounds
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors and occasionally work outdoors
  • During outreach programs or events the employee is frequently working outdoors; working in hot temperatures (above 100 degrees) working in cold temperatures (below 32 degrees) and walking on uneven ground

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / EXAMINATION PROCESS

  • Ability to provide own transportation to meetings and other commitments as needed
  • Available for varied workdays and hours within the FCPL operating schedule and, as needed, to accommodate meetings and other FCPL commitments
