Job Summary

Provide daily spiritual care for patients, family members and hospital staff. Respond to all referrals and codes as requested. Provide spiritual care rituals as requested by patient. Conduct faith/religious services for patients and others as requested. Assure that faith/spiritual resources are available to all patients per request.

Job Duties

Responds for emergencies, traumas, deaths, code blues, end-of-life decisions, ethical conflicts, crisis, and disasters within 30 minutes of request.

Assesses patient needs for spiritual support and provides necessary services and interventions.

Assists with family conflicts and personal relationships for patients, guests and staff.

Coordinates pre-surgery and surgery support to patients and guests and provides routine patient visitation.

Maintains accurate documentation in patient charts, department logs, and hospital reporting systems.

Communicates between department staff to ensure continuous service of patient needs.

Attends and participates in department staff meetings.

Provides spiritual support resources appropriate to developmental, emotional and psychological needs of patients, guest and staff.

Administers to sacramental needs of patients, guests and staff. Facilitates contacting patient's own clergy.

Provides worship opportunities for patients, guests and staff.

Serves as advocate and educational resource spiritual and ethical concerns for patients, guest and staff.

Participates in on-going professional development including supervision, spiritual direction, continuing education and retreats.

Provides consultation service to staff on specific patient needs.

Provides referral to outside resources for additional support and counseling in collaboration with social work, nursing, and /or other members of health care team.

Provides education to staff on utilization of Spiritual Care, ethics, Advance Directives, and other needs as requested.

Provides community education as requested.

Networks with area religious congregations.

Assists with training of new intern, supplemental, and volunteer chaplains.

Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Spiritual Care area.

Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.

Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in the field of Spiritual Care by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, and participating fully in the CPE educational process and integrating knowledge gained into current work practices.

Experience and Education

Bachelor’s degree from a CHEA recognized program preferred. ACPE educational standards required.

A completed ACPE application, an admission interview with a qualified interviewer, either graduation from high school/completion of GED or ordination by a religious/spiritual tradition or commission to function in spiritual care by an appropriate religious/spiritual authority as determined by ACPE.

One (1) unit of ACPE (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education) credit preferred.

English language proficiency adequate to function effectively in the clinical and educational settings is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must be willing and able to work with patients, guests and staff from multi-faith or no-faith backgrounds.

Communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.

English language proficiency.

Working Conditions

Employees should be able to be flexible to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Healthcare is a 24/7 industry, although we provide consistent scheduling the needs of the business can be impacted by emergent situations or a general change over time which can require scheduling to be adjusted.
