SFCC is one of two accredited community colleges that comprise the Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS). In addition to serving the urban and suburban population in greater Spokane, including students from Fairchild Airforce Base, CCS provides educational services to rural communities throughout our 12,302 square-mile region in Eastern Washington, including students from the Spokane and other Eastern Washington tribes. Serving about 8,200 students, SFCC endeavors to be an educational leader and a responsive partner with the community and region to provide access to relevant programs of the highest quality. We offer a large liberal arts/transfer program (approximately 75% of total enrollment) as well as state-of-the-art professional technical programs (about 25%). As reflected in our mission statement, we strive to “embrace diversity, promote equity, and foster global awareness” at every level of our college.

GENERAL DEFINITION

Under general direction this position performs a variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction of buildings, grounds, machinery, mechanical facilities and equipment for Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS) buildings. This position will work independently and with other trades utilizing a general knowledge of several related skill fields such as plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, and machinist work. This position travels to CCS sites throughout Spokane and Northeastern Washington.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As a member of a team, perform skilled work in construction, maintenance, modifying, or repairing buildings via Work Orders, Preventive Maintenance, and Building Improvement Requests with an emphasis on Work Order and Preventive Maintenance projects. *
  • Initiate layout and job planning of construction and execute painting repairs as needed. *
  • Repair floors, walls, ceilings, screens, windows, sashes, and other general building components; evaluate and repair broken locks, doors, and door closers; repair roofs and roof leaks; build, repair, and install shelving, casework, and other fixtures; build concrete forms and basic concrete patch finishing. Perform some keying work. *
  • Construct offices and rooms in existing buildings; repair unique college items such as bleachers, tennis courts, batting cages, and other items; assemble and disassemble cubical walls and furniture; construct furniture; and aid in design of new projects. *
  • Install sheetrock, mud and tape and prepare surfaces for painting. Install vinyl wall covering material and trim. Utilize sand or media blasting equipment to prepare structural and architectural surfaces for final finish. *
  • Read and evaluate building plans and specifications. Coordinate with administrators, staff, other trade workers and contractors to complete tasks. *
  • Purchase parts needed for repair of buildings and grounds. *
  • Operate hand and power tools in a skilled manner; fabricate material and equipment in workshops. Drive service truck as required, and load and unload materials and supplies. *
  • May perform work in other trades.*
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Complies with district policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements. *
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *
  • Indicates this is an essential duty.

This position is designated a bargaining unit position.

COMPETENCIES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)

  • Experience operating hand tools, power tools or other shop equipment.
  • Ability to assess building repair issues and explain issues/concerns.
  • Ability to communicate in English.
  • Knowledge of chemicals and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ability to read and interpret SDS instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and as a member of a team.
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
  • A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals and objectives of CCS.
  • The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, community and technical college system.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion.

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS)

  • High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent mix of education and experience that demonstrates the candidate meets all competency requirements for this position.
  • Four (4) or more years' applicable work experience.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a carpenter or related trade; or full journey status as a carpenter or related trade in a union.
  • Experience working in higher education or general government.
  • Experience reading building plans.

CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

TOTAL COMPENSATION WITH BENEFITS: $71,007-$80,064.

Total compensation is an estimate based upon adding the following amounts together:

  • Base compensation of $53,100-$61,632, plus
  • Current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates, plus

  • Median retirement fund contributions.

The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the District to sponsor an H1-B visa. In addition, the Community Colleges of Spokane maintains a drug-free work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and state-owned vehicles. Must be able to successfully work in and promote a multicultural work and education environment.

Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position. Once an applicant is chosen for an interview, they are required to complete and submit a declaration regarding sexual misconduct and investigation per state law.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work is equally performed in indoor temperature-controlled office environment, and outdoor uncontrolled elements.
  • Move up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 75 lbs. occasionally.
  • Work is active in nature.
  • Frequent repetitive hand/wrist motions and finger manipulation.
  • Operates and controls movement of power tools and/or large mechanized, powered and non-powered equipment.
  • Frequent kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing and twisting.
  • Enter, crouch, twist, work and climb in and out of confined spaces.
  • Extension of arms overhead for sustained periods.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, dust, and/or odors.
  • Respiratory equipment used that may require adherence to applicable safety rules and standards.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Full-time schedule (12-months, 40-hours a week).
  • 6-month probationary period; may be extended up to 12 months.
  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • Requires local or regional travel.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator license required.
  • Criminal background check required.
  • May be required to work alternate shift.
