Job Title: Head Counselor
Hours: 45-55 hours per week
Classification: Nonexempt, hourly, seasonal
Reports to: Camp Directors
Position Purpose:
Every counselor at Camp Kingfisher is hired to:
lead campers as a positive, caring role model
provide campers with fun, positive outdoor learning experiences
help campers grow and learn through challenges
As the primary caregivers for each camper in their group Camp Counselors must be fun, dynamic and safety conscious. Camp Counselors plan and implement daily schedules, lead activities and songs, coordinate with co-counselors, and communicate with parents.
In addition to regular counselor responsibilities, Head Counselors oversee, plan, and supervise programs for a specific age group at camp. Head counselors supervise 5-15 counselors throughout the summer season.
Job Responsibilities:
Supervise and serve as a mentor to an assigned group of new and returning staff; set clear expectations in areas of camper care, technical skills, community care, and professional goals
Supervise the development and implementation of your counselor’s environmental education activities (hikes, animal demonstrations, science exploration activities)
Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for your age group (including campers and staff)
Plan and implement all-camp activities, large raptor presentations, staff get-togethers, end-of-year celebrations, and more.
Provide performance tips and conduct mid-season evaluations for your staff
Lead weekly meetings and check-in with your staff
Complete additional duties as assigned
Other Job Duties:
Lead a camp staff team to deliver and supervise a late evening at camp
Contribute to verbal/written evaluations and communication as requested
Keeping track of and recording hours worked, requesting director’s approval for any additional hours prior to work
Qualifications:
Ability to coach, mentor, guide, and lead groups of all ages in an outdoor setting
Excellent customer service skills
21 years old & 2 years of college preferred
Previous Camp Kingfisher experience preferred
Background in environmental education, natural history, education, child care, or camps.
Willingness to handle captive wildlife, training provided
Current tetanus shot or willingness to obtain one
Current First Aid/CPR certification, course provided
Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season
Must be able to lift over 20 pounds
Valid GA driver’s license
