POSITION SUMMARY
The Business Unit Manager provides leadership consistent with the Vision, Mission and Strategic direction of the company, employing the principles of continuous improvement to achieve business goals. This position is responsible for developing and deploying strategies to improve the culture and productivity of Whitney Blake’s Vermont operations. The Business Unit Manager maintains direct oversight of the operations team (people, facility) and provides support to internal key stakeholders, customers, suppliers and the Whitney Blake executive team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Utilizes leadership skills to drive the execution of plant operations, ensuring alignment with overall business goals and objectives. Establish and monitor overall plant performance meeting production and quality standards.
  • Contribute to the safety of all employees by actively complying with and participating in safety programs and promoting a “culture of safety.”
  • Utilizing effective organizational planning and leadership to deliver targeted results for productivity, continuous improvement, growth and profitability.
  • Deliver operational excellence in all areas of operations, maintaining consistent best in class product quality.
  • Analyze operations to evaluate site performance and determine areas of improvement. Direct activities to increased efficiency through controlling material, labor and operational expenses.
  • Maintain and optimize existing plant facilities and equipment. Make adjustments to and replace facilities and equipment when necessary by planning and providing justification of expenditures.
  • Provide leadership and associate training to accomplish the company goals.
  • Motivate and develop associates.
  • Incorporate organization, structure, flow and plant cleanliness through the deployment of lean principles (5S, value stream mapping, kaizen, TPM, visual tools, etc.).
  • Lead by example, applying sound troubleshooting methodologies in the investigation and corrective action of root cause as they pertain to equipment, instrumentation, processes and/or product. PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act).
  • In-depth understanding of the roles and responsibilities of all the functional areas within the Plant.
  • Foster employee engagement and accountability. Maintain sound management-employee relationships.
  • Ensure proper people management processes are applied and development of successors for key positions.
  • Involvement in the development of the strategic direction and leadership of the company.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and business practices to include industry standards, Good Manufacturing Practices, ISO requirements, health and safety.
  • Perform other related duties as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • In-depth knowledge of operations in order to improve overall business understanding/results/procedures.
  • Proven skills in business and financial management. Working knowledge of budgets and financial statements.
  • Use of analytical techniques and models to assist in decision making.
  • Understanding of the impact factory performance has in the areas of delivery, cost and service.
  • Team player capable of successfully interacting at all levels with customers, peers, seniors & subordinates in the successful resolution of day-to-day business issues.
  • Capable of influencing key stakeholders, collecting critical inputs and facilitate collective solutions.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Possess the ability to teach others effectively.
  • Ability to use management tools in normal job function to handle multiple tasks with proper prioritization, ability to be able to give direction and instruction to others.
  • Capability to work independently, handle changing priorities and short time constraints.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor Science degree in Engineering or technical discipline. Experience may be considered in lieu of a degree for a candidate who can demonstrate capable of successfully fulfilling all duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • 10+ years of experience in high paced manufacturing environment
  • 5+ years of experience in wire/cable manufacturing preferred
  • 3+ years of prior demonstrated managerial/leadership experience
  • Experienced in manufacturing material control systems (MRP, Kanban, Forecasting, Planning, Procurement, etc.)
  • Lean or 6-sigma training with demonstrated application experience is important
  • Ability to work hours, as required, that are appropriate to completing projects and tasks on schedule
COMPUTER SKILLS
  • Proficient computer skills: MS Windows, MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Must have a strong working knowledge of ERP and MRP systems
SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS
  • Direct supervisory requirements for Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance
  • Coaching, mentoring, training and project leadership.
  • Responsible for workflow, ensuring training for new employees, and answering job-related questions
  • Actively participate in building a culture that is based upon the principles of collaboration, respect, responsibility and continuous improvement.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Office: Typical office environment.
  • Manufacturing: Work involves use of manufacturing equipment or close proximity to equipment. May be exposure to some routine manufacturing related substances.
  • Recurring physical demands include sitting, standing, walking, crouching and use of computer.
  • Location: Bellows Falls, Vermont.
  • General Hours: 7 am – 4 pm (or as appropriate to accomplish customer satisfaction)
  • Key Stakeholders: Executive Leadership Team, Sales, Engineering, Material
  • TRAVEL; Limited travel < 15%.
